Should be easy for the bird lovers, i took some shots of Birds of prey at a village fete last weekend, however forgot to make a note of this one.
could someone let me know what it is please.

thanks.

I would not dare to guess, but it's a nice portrait and I am sure someone will be along soon to help with the ID.

Def not a hobby, wrong colour to head and face. It looks like a Lanner falcon, sometimes they are crossed with Saker falcons by falconers, so it may be a cross of some type.

To OP, could you tell us the size of the bird please?
This is an image of a hobby which to me looks similar but a Lanner would be bigger than a Hobby which is around the size of a Black Bird.

thanks for the replies, to help he was not very big, smaller than a sparrowhawk yet bigger than your average garden blackbird,

here are 2 more of the cheeky chap on his stand, hope this helps to I.D

The forum expert on hawks and falcons is the pink mod Cobra when he spots this I'm sure he'll have some input. Looking at those images it appears to be a little on the large size for a Hobby but as there is nothing to judge against it's difficult to be sure.

As Andy has already said without a positive size, its a tough call.
Its totally the wrong shape and colour for a Hobby too.
However I'm pretty sure that this is a lannerette (male lanner), but there is a lot of white
on the breast. so maybe a hybrid (lanner x )

The other possibility is that its a Perlin
(Peregrine x Merlin) but it looks too wide and the colours are not quite right.
Assuming the colours are accurate in the last couple of images,
I am going with Lannerette (possibly x)
In the air they are (look) around the same size as a Spar (female Sparrowhawk)

That's good enough for me. Thanks for all your help, will remember to write it down next time.

 Female KESTREL then possibly  LANNER FALCON, But then i thought i Lanner is more grey..............

Nothing like a Kestrel,
and I said Lannerette ;)

Please check out the new rules on getting ar**y, it's not a competition.....:rules:

I think as a MOD his pinkness is pretty well up on the rules, he's also pretty hot... On birds of prey. Plus there didn't seem to be anything arsey about his reply. Calm down dear!

Opps! i will try and keep out of such issues in the future :crying:

Sorry if you guys were offended by my answer,
I can assure you none was intended.
It may however been a little short as I was just heading out the
door of my hotel room for food.

So, let me expand a little, kestrels are more of a mottled rusty-brown,
The males have a grey cap.

Lanners are females, males are Lannerettes
The females are a little heavier (by about a 1/3)
typically I fly males at around 1lb
The females at around 1lb. 8oz.

Although they retain the gingery cap
female colours are more muted.
Unfortunately I have no way of up loading to the lap top, or I'd nip to the
Van and post a picture of the Lannerette that fast asleep in there.

As I said the forum expert, even if he's legless. :D

Hope it's OK to post these here OP but I found it an interesting read and had some shots that fitted the discussion.

Not sure I ever got the bottom of these similar captive ID's due to hybrid issues but I'll label them based on what I was led to believe at the time I took them.............

I'll agree with those I'ds Phil and the last one, do you have a front shot? That could be a hobby
Depending on size, it may also be a pere x pere / lanner, but as you said hybrids are a bugger to id.

Unfortunately that's the only shot I have of the last bird.
