I am fairly new to photographing wildlife, but find I come back with a number of photos of things I cannot identify. Iwas wondering what websites and tools members used to aid identification of what they have taken?

Is there a protocol in tagging photos to show you re unsure of the identification so a not to mislead others, some I have I think I am right not would not be sure to an independent confirmation.

I can share 3 sites I use for identification but I am sure there are a number of others out there (All are 3 are UK centric):-
Birds - http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdidentifier/form.aspx

Dragon and Damsilflies flys - http://www.dragonfly-images.co.uk/

Hover Flies - http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artmay07/cd-hoverflies.html

Thanks for those sites Richard.

I am in the same boat as you as a beginner, I also use the RSPB site and a Collins guide.

One other site I've used is - http://www.uksafari.com/wildfiles.htm

When all else fails I stick them up on the forum and usually get a reply pretty quickly.

Thanks for the replies looks as though this has unearthed a good set of source information, it is going to take me a little time to assimilate the sites and getting use to using them, but thanks every one for the input.

I hope others have found this useful as well, and any more hints of identification sites or back ground information would still be useful.

is excellent, has some really good search options and brings them back as thumbnails.

Birdforum.net is an excellent community, look in the "Nature in General" Subforum and dont be afraid to post a pic/question. Always found a friendly reception and quick answer.

Some links above I already use, some are new (thanks!). If I don't have a clue where to start, I ask here. Eg my last one, a flying insect. No idea what terms to search for! Try typing in 'fly' 'flying insect' and take a day off lol.
http://www.animalphotos.me/moth-.htm I found is a handy quick-glance guide for moths.

(If the answer to every post was 'Google it', there'd be no need for the interaction of fora ;) )

Birdforum has a number ID forums as has been stated and plenty of people keen to help but one thing to say is in my experience forum members will be much more helpful if you show you've had a go at an ID - maybe by talking about the main features of the bird/mammal/plant and perhaps suggesting an ID - you do get people who make no effort and just post shot after shot of common species with no effort at an ID and that wears people down :)
