If you had to start again would you buy the same?

Yes
This is just out of interest......

Right your kit is in the boot of your car and a run away bus crashes into it crushing it into tiny pieces. They accept liability straight away and hand you a cheque for what you paid for it.......

So you have the cash...... How much? Do you buy exactly the same kit again or do you go off at a tangent? How much have you spent and what would you buy again? Would you jump ship and change company?

I would be stuck trying to decide whether to stay Canon or go Nikon, would be torn between a 7D or D700 would also go for a 24-70 + 70-200 line up rather than 17-40 + 70-200. The Nikon line-up would probably take me over budget though.

I'd stick with Nikon and tbh would probably buy the same kit (or the new versions) again. I'd maybe consider the upgrade to FF, but that would involve adding £1k to the pot and I'm not convinced that I'd see a grand's worth of benefit

I'd go for a 7D again, but then might possibly consider full frame instead. As far as lenses are concerned, it would be a great chance to revamp and rethink. I wouldnt fall into the trap of buying the cheapies then moving up and ending up with a box of lenses that dont see the light of day.

I would stick to what I've got, and re-buy pretty much everything I have now again.

Having only just bought mine I'd cry!

I doubt I could actually buy it again for what I paid but I would get exactly the same again. The only other thing I'd love is an 85mm f1.4.

Depends if I'm honest on the insurance claim....;)

I would stick with Nikon and I wouldn't be far off, may be a tweak with a couple of lenses.

I suppose I should answer my own question too :rules:

£11000 was the total with my insurance company...

£3600 D3x
£1700 D700
£1300 24-70
£1800 70-200 vr2
£280 AFS 50mm f1.4G
£550 SB900 x 2
£80 Meike grip for D700

Lee filter kit rather than all the individual filters

I wouldn't buy the Sigma 20mm again as it gets little use having the 24-70, Computrekker case wouldn't get bought either as it doesn't fit my laptop.

I oroginally bought my 500D as a grey import, that I would not do again. I'd probably buy another 500D as i dont think I need anything more Pro yet. I would buy Body only and then a nifty (as that, of all of my lens' gets the most use) and then save up for a 10-22 and a 70-200 probably!

btw, does anyone have a time machine so I can go back and change?

Not had it that long but I reckon I would get the same again.

GF1 + 20mm +14-45 + 45-200 + a load of old MF lenses

May end up getting an SLR too one day but I don't feel the need at the moment.

i NEVER have all my kit in one place at one time ... lol Unless the house burns down....

But I would poss try nikon as I would have nothing to lose on this scenario...

MD

Have D300 - Nikon 70-200VR, Nikon 50mm 1.4 AFS, Tamron 28-75 2.8, SB900. Insurance value approx £3500.

Would get a D700, 24-70, SB900 and then save like mad or hit credit card to get the 50mm and the 70-200.

I started last year with a sony A300 with kit lens. Bought a sigma 70-300 and a 50mm sony portrait lens since too. As i knew nothing about photography at the time i went for the sony because it was easy to use and all the buttons were in the right places. But now id probably change it and buy a newer sony or maybe a nikon D5000 or higher maybe..

I like my sony though, not really tested what it can do yet so im happy with it.

not sure what i would do...
I have the a200 and some lenses... i would say i would have bought a a700 or maybe switched to nikon and gone with the d90...

Depends if I'm honest on the insurance claim....;)

yeaaaah...man....it was a real shame they couldn't make out the 3 D3s's from the smouldering rubble eh? or the 600mm f4? :nono:

Not quite: instead of D3's and a D3x, it'd be D3s's and a D3x.
Plus all the same lenses, bar the 70-200 f/2.8 VR-I, which would be the new 70-200 f/2.8 VR-II...
If I went back in time, I'd skip buying the Pentax ME Super, the Olympus OM-bodies and go straight to the F2-AS > F3 > F5...
Skip the medium-format kit: I bought my Pentax 6x7 kit in 2001 and should have stuck with the 'works' Hasselblad - a year later we went to D1x bodies and the World turned...
Now it's just an expensive paperweight...

Another Peugeot 307 estate - hmm

Camera equipment - That's a tough one. Loved my Nikons but I'm happy with Canon just now. I only have a 40D and a D70 but I'm happy with the Canon lenses. Too much time is wasted fretting over the body - they are old news 5 mins later.

5D mk2 or D700 for me, need to think which one. Then presuming 5D I'd get 24-70mm + 70-200mm f/4 *IS* + 100mm macro *L*, 85mm f/1.8, Tokina 12-24mm *mk2* and flashes + *Lee filters*. Maybe I could afford 135mm f/2 with the mix and a better car.

Now that is a though, but I am generally very scared of buses.

Pretty much the same I'd imagine.

Might go for a 5D mk II instead of my 5D, so I'd have two video capable bodies.

And I doubt I'd replace the nifty 50, might take an 85 1.8 instead.

1D IV, 70-200, 24-70 and 15mm would stay the same. Skyports I would replace with more Skyports. And I'd chuck in an extra few quid for a 2nd 580 EX II instead of the 430.

Your scenario means that I wouldn't need to work my way up through lenses and bodies again which would save time and a little frustration & expense. Phew!

I would certainly wander over to the Nikon stand and have a good look at the D3s, D3x range to see for myself who's got the best low light performance. If at that stage I went back to Canon, I'd have a good old think about covering 70mm to 400mm and whether 100-400L together with 70-200 f4 L IS and 1.4x extender isn't the most efficient choice: maybe look at the 70-200 L f2.8?

Would I buy the same again? Certainly in terms of brand it's a resounding YES and my current line up is finally getting somewhere near where I want it. Yes, I would love my Siggie 24-70 to be Nikons version, and to add a Nikon 14-24 to the Siggie 10-20 and maybe even an 85mm, but generally I like what I have. Wouldn't object if the SB600's suddenly morphed into 900's, or if my basic Lencarta lights turned into ElitePro heads, but I don't use them enough to justify the change from my own pocket, so yes, I would replace with the same again. :)

After slapping the bus driver, yes. I've got what I need now and I wouldn't ever change from Nikon.
I would also have a go at peli, cos its supposed be indestructible! :D

Kev.

If they paid me what I paid for my Kit I would be about £5000 short of replacing it with the same kit.:bang:

If buying Nikon (preferred option): D700, 16-35/4, 35/2, 50/1.4, 85/1.8 and possibly a 70-200/2.8.

If buying Canon (from a landscape POV): 5dmk2, 17-40/4, 50/1.4, 85/1.8 and possibly a 70-200/2.8.

(Maybe a Sigma 50/1.4 for either option)

What I paid wouldn't come close to replacing it _ I bought it all shortly before the price rises a bit over a year ago. If they were paying the replacement costs, I would go for exactly what I've got, although (like Yv) I might go for Nikkors to replace the Sigma 24-70 and 70-200. If I could swing it, I might try for a D90 insted of a replacement D70.

I think I bought right in the first place well pretty much right, I would probably do a body change I think the 500D wasn't the best choice now when I look back, I think I would prefer a 7D or a 5D but the 5D would need a change of the 10-22mm to the 16-35mm.

I usually prefer to spend more in the first place and buy right the first time than loose money buying wrong and then spending more again to get the right thing.

I pretty much am starting again (apart from the body) now that I am getting more 'into' photography, and realising that my current lens choices are daft.

I have a 50mm f/1.4 on the way, and a 17-40 (I think) planned as well as a 70-200. Selling my Sigma and two other lenses to help the cost of the 17-40. Eventually I might upgrade the body....

I almost certainly wouldn't buy Canon again.

I might just go for Sony for a wonderful full frame body with in body IS so that my fast primes would all have IS. Or, maybe I'd go for either the excellent D300 or D700. But Sony would be very very tempting.

I quite like my set-up. I'd probably want to put some cash back into it and get an FX body like a D3 but that's about it, other than seeing if the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 is better than my nikon 12-24mm.

I usually prefer to spend more in the first place and buy right the first time than loose money buying wrong and then spending more again to get the right thing.

I tend to agree with this, although sometimes the "right thing" doesn't come on general sale until 6 months after you've bought the now-obsolete former "right thing". :)

The Nikon SB-800 was the "right thing" until the SB-900 came along. The D300 was the "right thing" until the D300s came along.

I'd definitely get the D300s, Sigma 10-20mm, and SB-900s again. The 70-200mm f/2.8VR would become a VRII, and any leftovers would go towards a D3s and 24-70mm f/2.8.

My insurance payout would put me in the advanced entry level bracket so something like the Canon 500D but I have handled one and am not over keen,so Nikon D90 but I love using my old M42 lenses on the current 350D and as the XX Nikons dont meter with adapted lenses so thats out.Never used a Sony but I do like the handling of the Pentax's so I would seriously consider going down the K7 route

I`m happy with what I have and would buy the same again.

Taking the presumption that the insurance pay out would allow me to buy very same kit; I think I would give-up photography!

The amount of hiding gear, sneaking a new item pass the Ms., explaining why I am selling something and buying another bit (made a good saving here and there), the verbal abuse I've had to tolerate; the endless shopping sprees I've had to endure, as a means to please her after a new lens fell in my lap  ... but all that doesn't even come close to when she came home with one of these  and she is not even into horses  :suspect:

So, no thank you; I'd take the money and just stick to PDAs .. unless the payout is enough to allow me to .... :schtum:

I'd buy most of it again, but I'd skip the short primes - I just never use them !
