I'm moving my web hosting

Thanks everyone, well my site is down but to be honest the biggest problem for me is that my hosted images are all down meaning that all my tips, pictures etc on TP will not be visible. Hopefully one.com will get notification shortly and complete their part. They did say 48 hours so there is still plenty of time for them. It will have been worth the time and effort in the end as it is a third of the cost for six times the space.

I'm trying really hard to ignore my chain being pulled but I just can't....

Cheap hosting is just that - cheap. Servers stacked high with sites, they do not care about churn as a long as 1.0001 client joins for every 1 that leaves. If you are happy with a cheap web hosting company then great, I really hope it works out for you.

You can guarantee no loss of email/web site etc. But for the non-technical, the only way to achieve that is to use a hosting company that cares.

The question is why do people want to pay 20p per week for hosting when they will pay £3 for a coffee every day ? Which matters most, your website/email or your Starbucks ?

I run a small hosting company and have lost count of the number of times large companies have caused misery to small businesses through simply not caring.

Ben, if my site was critical I would have left it with 1&1 who are a professional bunch but I can live with the service I will get. 3gb would cost me a lot more x 2 than what I am paying and one of the pc mags did a comparison and found their up time was 99.9% anyway. I do agree to some extent but for this I am more than happy with one.com, I have been a customer of theirs with my other site for 18 months without problem

I've had issues with one.com and I tell everyone as such.

I cancelled my account with them 4 months before renewal (requires 3 months notice) and was told it was cancelled, checked account after 1 week, still showing as renewal due on xx date. Phone back up, "no your account is still active" wtf!!!

I did this 4 times before it showed as being cancelled by which time it was after the 3 month notice period. 2 months later I get a bill for £60. Phoned up, argued the case, told them I wasn't paying and ended up getting letters from dutch/swedish lawyers threatening court action etc. Tried contacting their UK branch to explain but no response.

We were after a mortgage at the time so I ended up paying just to make sure there wasn't anything that could go against is :(

One.com = bunch of robbing ******* cowboys!!!!

Hodders, what's the name of your hosting company?

Harvey_nikon sorry to hear about your experience will bear it in mind!

Edit: in fact I cancelled one last year with them just advising them in time and printing the paperwork at the time.

Got an email at 03:49 from their setup robot giving me chance to sort password etc out. Not able to actually do that till this evening though as will be at work. Also had a reply to my email to their support again no time to check.

I answered the email on my iPhone and now they have sent me automated details to log in etc. Will do this later

Well I can now log into the control panel and set up email accounts. I have tried sending mail to them but that does not yet work

You got a domain away from 1&1 - consider that one of the biggest achievements in your life so far, honestly! Sounds like it all going smoothly :) congrats.

When I first set up my email accounts with them I could recieve mail but not send mail, I then ticked the 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)' in the properties and all was well.

The site and email are not working yet :nono:

haha true, but sounds like you have broken free of 1&1 so the hard bit is over :)

FTP not working either so its probably a case of still waiting for the DNS servers to propagate or one.com hasn't finished setting up the server side.

I've had two sites with one.com for a couple of years now and the service has been superb.
Never had a problem at all, and when using the live help chat thing the person on the other end was always knowledgeable and very helpful

I can not recommend them highly enough

email still not up. My home page (which was with 1&1) is still appearing on the internet but no links work now. No FTP access yet.

Don't they give you a temporary FTP? I just setup an account with Tsohost and they gave me FTP access with a temporary URL to move all my data across, so that it is a seamless change.

Well just used the online chat thing and asked when it would go live. She said that it had not been transferred yet. I told her I did it on 19th at 17:04 and she said that it will have been held up by the weekend so it is 48 weekday hours rather than just 48 hours!

well a whois says:

Registrar:
One.com A/S t/a One.com A/S [Tag = TJNF-DK]
URL: http://www.one.com

Name servers:
ns67.1and1.co.uk
ns68.1and1.co.uk

so the hosting co has changed but the DNS servers have not. id suggest that they hadnt made the requested change before they left friday as once submitted its automatic and would not stop because of the weekend.

Reading between the lines that is pretty much what they were saying! I will be doing exactly the same with the cowasaki domain next week too so this will be a double check.

KIPAX is correct about the unlimited claims. Chances are they are a reseller that hasn't bothered to read their providers small print and provide the same small print to their customers. The whole "unlimited" idea relies on the fact that any serious website that expects serious bandwidth is run by someone who knows not to use them and those with average websites will never make a dent in their bandwidth allowance.

Well it's linked to one.com now so should all be up and running by tomorrow.

incidentally one.com's t&c's states:

Traffic is basically unlimited. However, traffic must be normal in nature and not disrupt that of other customers. If a customer's traffic disrupts that of others, One.com reserves the right to close the customer's web hotel without notice and/or make a separate charge for the traffic. One.com reserves the absolute right to decide whether or not traffic is excessive. On closure of a web hotel, no refund will be made of any subscription paid in advance.

The t&c don't bother me, it is effectively unlimited for my uses. I do not need to worry about it.

Now to upload my site again :)

Ok so a little more than 48 hours, more like 3 days but not bad and VERY cheap.

Well everything is working.

Just started to move www.cowasaki.co.uk too.

Having done it once I just fired through it in five minutes.....

Placed the order then went to 1&1's cancellation page and cancelled it then changed the TAG to one.com

Lets see how quick they are mid week with someone who knows what to do, with any luck it could be up and running other than propagation of DNS by tonight.

Right this morning www.cowasaki.co.uk is up and running. The email is still flakey but the site, gallery etc is working.

www.upgradeyourmac.co.uk appears to have lost it's flakey email this morning so in reality it looks like it actually takes about a week before everything is working properly.

The built in gallery is quite acceptable gallery.cowasaki.co.uk so I am just starting to move my images over but only had time for four albums. I can then use these images on TP too rather than FTPing them to a folder on here. All in all not bad for £10.58 for the time year and about £23 per year after that whilst including 3Gb of storage, a blog, web site designer (err), gallery and no charges for heavier use.

I am happy with it although I am sure I would rather go back to 1&1 internet if it was critical, they always had really good professional service but they are SOOOO much more expensive at £40 for 500mb.
