Got my iMac yesterday. Got the top of the range, 24" dual-3ghz model! Around £2,200 with 3 year Apple Care Protection Plan on student discount of 12% which I managed to blag even though i'm not a Uni student anymore ;)

Seriously, it's insane, best computer i've ever used. The screen is stunning, the size is just awesome and all my images look sooooo crisp. Browsing the net is also insane, it's so wide!

Also the noisy ones from the wedding don't look so bad on this, plus the noise reduction on Lightroom helps.

Lightroom, Aperture, Photoshop all run soooooo smoothly.

So pleased, if you are looking for a new computer, seriously, get a Mac, they are outstanding!
 
I got one of the older white ones a few years ago (still running tiger) and I never feel I need to upgrade, I hate to think how good yours is with Leopard and iLife08 and all that jazz
 
OOO no! Imacs = Death! Naughty bad, asbestos leaks out the back and when switched on they secrete anthrax!
Quick, sell it me, I'll take that nasty bad death machine of your hands and as a favour I'll lend you my imac thats only 3 years old fresh! :suspect: :thumbs:
 
do your photos print out as well as they look on screen?

no reason why not if the printer is calibrated correctly
 
Just started my new work placement today all the comps in office iMacs :) so big new learning curve for me, already had a play about with photo booth thats a laugh .:)
 
Hehe, maybe you should have just bought a 24" monitor, I hear they can be had for under £2.2K if you look around........since you havent really given any reasons for like it, other than the huge resolution :P

Sadly I am on an 5 year old (?) 'Old White One' pimped a little and running 10.5.5, even worse is that my mother announced that she had 'Treated' herself and got the top of the range 24' beasty a few weeks ago, grrrrrrrrrrr ( She only uses Safari and checks her mail ! )
 
You will never be able to buy another Windows PC again :) It is a completely different world. When I was using PCs I was forever changing bits of it. With the Macs it just doesn't seem to happen and its more about using it. When I had PCs as my main machine I spent more than half my time messing with the machine rather than using it now it is the other way round and I am now into more productive pastimes!

I have also found that MacOS is much better than Windows at dealing with older equipment. Until recently, when I replaced it with my new 17" Macbook pro, I was using a 1.33GHz iBook. The iBook would happily run CS3, imagine that on a 1.3GHz P4 laptop with Windows. If you are new to the Mac there are a few hints and tips on my site!
 
Guys, is it just me or you're not really comparing apples to apples?
8utters, a new PC really should run better/faster than an old one, otherwise there's little reason behind the upgrade, isn't it?

cowasaki, did Apple ever sell 1.33GHz P4 iBooks? Because if you're talking about the Power CPU powered iBooks, then it really is different stuff you're talking about (writing, technically :P).

EDIT: I'm only a little biased and iMacs do look slick and they seem to be nice pieces of hardware (I just don't like Mac OS X much), so congratulations on your buy 8utters. :)
 
^ The Dell I just sold was an awesome machine. Only about 6-8 months old. Yeah it ran Photoshop and Lightroom probably just as well, but the Mac just feels SO much nicer to use.

Been using Macs for years so it's nothing new, each Mac I buy just seems nicer and nicer to use though hehe. I've been using MacOS since before OSX was even out (since OS 8 lol). The main reason for not switching my desktop to Mac until now was becuase I did a degree in Computer and Video Games, and needed Windows (at the time I started my course BootCamp hadn't been invented, had it I would have got a Mac from the start).

Just editing my shots from the wedding I did on Sunday, got some great shots, i'l post them up here later :)
 
I'll be jumping from the pc camp into the 24" imac world

won't be getting the 3ghz though, 2.8 ghz with 4gig ram and a 500gb disc should be ok

The speed difference when processing the same files in CS is amazing when compared to a windows based system of similar spec.

Eh! No I was saying that my 1.33GHz iBook ran CS3 quite happily..... Imagine trying to run CS3 on a windows laptop using a 1.33GHz P4 ! I am well aware of the differing architectures I have a web site explaining how to upgrade the things :)

I was in John Lewis the other day, and some of the MACS on display were JAW DROPPING. Big 30" display, with a small flat slab where I guess the guts are.

Immediatly around the corner an HP, just as big, just as sexy and hellishly trendy.

Windows or Mac, who cares, they are all good.

Depends what its doing! The 4GHz PC will be blisteringly fast but when you are using software that is capable of using the extra cores and plenty of ram then a 3.2GHz 8 core Mac would be quicker (for that software!). Personally I have built probably around 200+ PCs including using exotic cooling systems such a phase change and liquid cooling (before it was mainstream!).

There is a place for both Macs and PCs. I do not own an iMac and would be unlikely to as I hate the all in one box thing so my Mac pro is my ideal Mac. I also have several PCs (both windows and linux) it is great now that both Macs and PCs can live in harmony on the same network using the same peripherals (although their users can't :bonk:). I really do like Macs though and currently have a Mac mini, pro and macbook pro plus my wife and kids have 3 macbooks and another iBook! so we do have a bit of a collection!

Its just a shame that there is no 'Mac' now. There should be something between a mac mini and a mac pro but I suppose it would possibly nick sales from the iMacs.

Basically they are all computers, they all work pretty much the same way. You could stick MacOS on a PC if Apple allowed it (or if you are naughty!) but personally I have moved to the Mac because I just like MacOS and the Mac version of CS3. There is software which I really miss though I just wish that Delphi was available for MacOS, the Mac equivalent is well not really equivalent ;)

Eh! They both fail. Hardware wise Apples are more reliable than the AVERAGE PC because your AVERAGE PC includes millions of cheapo naff ones but from experience of repairing both they are about as reliable as each other when you compare like for like so compare a DECENT PC with a Mac and they are both pretty good. Maybe the Apple has a slight edge BUT the PC has the advantage that it is cheaper to fix because the parts are so cheap... Software wise MacOS is more reliable but Windows has to contend with so many different drivers from different manufacturers. XP is pretty good though.
 
Im a PC man for ages now...was involved in building of hundrets of PC's...But i would love to try mac os for a longer while for simple reason...I like the way it looks :D
at my work place we have quite a lot of macs(recording studio, composition and keyboard lab and our graphics designers and few other *** from marketing are using mac pros) and whenever I have opportunity I play with/on them:)
Mac OS reminds me of old Amiga OS Workbench...

Well im on a Mac, and if you dont wind your neck in you will find it kills your account on here quite efficiently ! Everybody has a right to their opinion but you are starting to sound like a scratched record now. Choosing the opposite opinion to everybody else just to get a row going. We all get you think you are the greatest at everything, but if you think we care that much then you are sadly mistaken !

I like PC's and Mac's Period.

I used to work on Mac's all day. I went PC route at home because at the time 4-5 years ago it was cheaper for me to learn and build a PC than buy a Mac equivalant.

I'm now in a position to buy a new MacPro 8 Core 2.8ghz which I'm just about to order. I'm also editing video on my PC as Its Sony Vegas software and is PC only, but once I get the Mac I'll use Parallels to run it instead.

I feel you get less of a headache with OSX than windows, having had my PC die on me about 1 month ago and I had to get a new motherboard and CPU.
 
I worked with and on PCs since Master Gates was a lad. I got fed up with fixing them, rebuilding them, rebooting them or just having to use workarounds instead of getting on with my work.

I tried my first mac about three years ago and have never looked back. I have to use XP for a couple of obscure applications but I do this under parallels. I find XP much more stable on a mac so its not just down to the OS. If I had to use nothing but XP then I'd do so on an imac.

I've regained so much time by switching. I'm now considering my fourth mac purchase. I think there's some new imacs just around the corner :D

Was Lightroom and Photoshop purchased at the same time? Just wondering if there is a discount to be had if you get them all together?
I've been thinking of moving to a i mac for ages but having bought Photoshop CS3 for the PC :gag: I can't really bring myself to buy the Mac version as well............:shrug:

If you switch from the PC to the Mac you can take CS3 with you. Download the demo and use your existing serial number. You are licensed to use CS3 it does not matter which OS you use!

There is no package currently that includes Lightroom & Photoshop for PC or Mac. If you are a student then you can get Lightroom for about £75-80 and Photoshop for about £130 if I remember although Design Premium CS3 is £229 so I would say that that is worth getting
 
When I bought Lightroom 2.0 from Adobe they were offering discounts if bought with CS3, but if you have a legit version for PC (not a student version) you can apply to Adobe to switch the serial number.

I was considering an iMac as my new PC for a while as they are very quiet. At least the one I saw and heard in a quiet office was. There's no point in getting one for the OS, but if the hardware runs Windows well, then maybe...
Then again, I'd probably get rid of the OS X installation on it.

So a question for those who run a Windows installation on their iMacs: how happy are you with the performance of iMacs running Vista or XP?
