Using bootcamp they are the same speed as the same equivalent PC.

Using one of the software packages that allow you to run both MacOS and Windows together there is a speed drop as you would expect running two OSes at the same time.

I find myself turning to the Vista install constantly, (and I don't particularly like Vista). I have tried hard to get into Leopard but I just find myself scouring google to find answers to issues I have with it. Have to admit I am on the cusp of selling the Imac. Pity as I am getting used to Aperture 2.

What are you having problems with? You could try - http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/ which is quite good. Stick with it though as once you have got past the initial newness of it it is worth it.

Problems with basics really. The wireless system is awful, when adding a network you choose WPA instead of WEP to get it to work. Trying to get a wireless printserver working was ridiculous, you should be able to add the route through IPP but I had to do it through LPD !!!

Stupid workarounds that I have found through forums like the one you linked and if you dig deep you can see the frustration in the community. Not Mac bashing here but all my Vista PC's are a doddle to use/setup and the support is universal. Looks aside (and noise levels) I am not sure it's for me. I expect to sell it before the week is out. Shame really
 
It was a piece of pie to setup my wireless printer but its a USB printer connected to a Time Capsule. Found it in seconds, added and prints fine.

I have personally had the opposite happen with little or no problems with wireless under MacOS but endless ones with Vista. I think a big chunk of it is bad luck with certain devices. Not had this problem with any of the printers I have but I did have to wait for 5-6 weeks for the leopard driver for the Epson R2400 when leopard was launched.
 
In fairness I should have checked the state of play before buying the devices. I have a Canon ip4300 attached to a Belkin wireless p server through a Netgear wireles router and it gets a little complicated thus the frustration. The two Vista machines were simple though.
 
I've been following this thread, and all the others, with interest. I'm looking at getting a new laptop and thought maybe this is the time to go mac. Went into PCworld to have a look at the hardware and was surprised to see about a third of the machines running Vista.

Is there still a performance advantage for graphics if running vista on a mac?

The NEW Macbook now has a decent graphics card, the older macbook had simple on board graphics and was rather naff with 3D.

Sorry, should have been clearer with the question.

The general opinion seems to be that when working with photos etc a mac which is specced similarly to a PC, in terms of cpu mem etc, outperforms a PC. Is that still the case if the mac is running vista? Or is it dependant on the OS?

No its the OS. MacOS is significantly more efficient. If the Mac is running Vista its just a PC !

No this is not the case, if using the the same OS, and the hardware is identical then performance will be more or less the same.

But you can usually get the same spec for cheaper on a PC and it'll come with windows.
 
I refuse to be unloyal to my beloved Windows, but we do have them at college, not used them as of yet. Could never put any penny into the fashionable pocket of Apple.

They are only fashionable because they work! There are more Windows machines so they are by definition more fashionable so you are actually doing what you said you do not want to do :bonk:

To be honest I was a fan of Windows before I tried anything else, have you tried Linux that is also better in a lot of ways to Windows. They all have their advantages and disadvantages and I could sit here argueing the pros and cons of all three on either side. I have 4 kids and between the family we have 5 Apple laptops, 2 Apple desktops, 1 PC running Vista, 2 PCs running XP pro, 1 PC running XP Home and 1 PC running Linux !!!!

I have just been so surprised about how good MacOS is that I have just switched on mass. I love things like the family licence - Basically when the new OS comes out there is ONE version for everyone plus a SERVER version. So unlike Windows you don't pay more for all the extra features and for £129 you can install it on 5 machines !!

I do like XP though and it does really well working with so many vastly different computers even being compatible with crumbly 10 year old machines but I would rather have rock steady performance than compatibility with rubbishy old machines.

Anyway if you are happy with Windows you stick with it but give MacOS a try and you might also switch. I you look on my site there is a section for people who have just switched telling you how to do simple stuff.
