Hi,
I'm getting a 21.5" imac next week and was wondering if i will be able to back up my photos from it into my Lacie rugged hard drive or do i need a special mac hard drive. Sorry if this sounds a stupid question but i'm completely new to the mac's.

That will work just fine. If I were you I'd use Time Machine to make it REALLY simple!

Yes you will so long as it is FAT32 or reformatted to a mac specific format. The Mac will read NTFS but not write it.

While your at it take a look at my Top Tips thread (link in sig)

Out of the box Mac's will read NTFS files but as stated it won'twrite to them. You can get a copy of NTFS for Mac from Paragon (Who supply the NTFS read only software for Mac's) it's about £25 from the Apple shop.

on a mac IMHO there's only one backup worth considering - Time Machine, it just works and has saved my bacon several times, I'd say try it out before deciding on anything else

Time machine is great for full back up and you can if hard drive dies reinstall from time machine back up from disk, but if your system gets curupted then you end up transfering curuption back onto your mac,i have 2 back ups on 2 different drives,1 time machine and 1 just iphoto and itunes my main folders of importance. Were in the itunes and iphoto all i do is edit copy and paste onto external,if a erase needed would always go for the just itunes and iphoto back up alone every time,Clean install and put back only whats needed.;=D
