iMac question - older model

We have a scheme at work whereby you are awarded points for achievement etc and I have just found out I have almost enough for an iMac 24" Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/1GB/320GB/ SuperDrive, I would have to put about £150 towards it and if I did get it I would look at updating the RAM to 4gb. I realise this is an older model and I am going to call the rewards people tomorrow to see if it has been upgraded to a newer version.

I intend to use external drives for my images so hopefully won't clog up the HD, is this a reasonably specced machine? Obviously I have to use the reward points so £150 for a new iMac seems pretty good, if anyone has one the same as this I'd appreciate your feedback.

I've used the 24-incher (pretty much that same spec) and coming back to my little MacBook wasn't pleasant. It's a great machine and you won't be disappointed!

Also, you must be a very hard worker to earn enough points for that beast! :thumbs:
 
Thanks guys, I found out today that I cannot make up the extra in cash so was a bit disappointed until he told me I could take them in Capital Bonds which are like a voucher and can be redeemed at numerous stores one of which is Comet and they just happen to sell the 24" 2.8ghz model with 2gb of RAM. The added bonus is ithat it is £50 cheaper than the earlier model bought through the rewards scheme.

Supplemetary question - will they be cheaper in the Boxing Day/January sales?
 
I doubt if it will get cheaper mate the imac's normally stick at the normal prices.

You will not be disappointed with that machine it handles very nicely indeed and will run you app's like a wild thing.

I have the 2.4g 24" model you mentioned first, very happy with it.

Apple are most likely introducing new iMacs early next year (probably at MacWorld in the second week of January).

This may mean that older models will be cheaper, but I only say that because new technology usually makes older technology lose value. Whether this is reflected in the sale price at Comet or others is entirely up to them.
 
PC world & Comet etc. make very little markup on Mac's, that's why they tend not to push them. I tried to buy the demo machine out of PC world and they offered me 3 months of their crappy warranty for free, wouldn't budge on price at all.
I'd say you're unlikely to save anything after Christmas.
 
At work I am responsible for a network of 1600 PCs.

At home we run Macs...

It's known as 'refurb'. They basically test returned machines and sell them at a 15-30(ish)% reduction. You might get light cosmetic damage, but nothing major.

And most importantly, they give you the same warranty as on a brand new Mac.

I've not used it myself (because I can still get the Student discount and the additional saving in buying refurbished isn't quite as much). But I've heard of many people who have bought a refurb Mac and been pleased with it.

Unfortunately the Apple Store doesn't accept the vouchers I'm getting otherwise I would have bought a refurb.
 
I just bought the 20" version last week,really impressed with it.Upgraded my 1 gb ram to 4gb,(£42) from Crucial.com
 
Mine is refurb (iMac).
We never have been able to work out which bit is old.
Also we have bought my dad a refurb air for christmas, from what I have seen it's the same (didn't open it as it's plastic wrapped).
The only thing is the boxes are not artworked, I'm happy to save £300-500 and have a plain box lol.
