Hi all,
Had my iMac for a few months and it was fine all of today but I just got in and when I press the power it shows the white apple loading page and starts to show a loading bar that it doesn't normally show for a few seconds, then you hear it cut off and it turns itself off.

I have tried many times and have unplugged at mains and tried after that to no effect.

It was working perfectly and now it won't even power up?!

Any help is appreciated,

Thank you

Without actually seeing the mac my first instinct is that it's a hard disk failure. I've seen the symptoms you describe a number of times and most of the time it was the hard disk that had gone bad.

Now you say the mac won't power up at all. Ok, remove the power plug and leave it for at least 15 seconds. If it still won't power up there's possibly a power supply problem as well. Power supplies often don't like to be removed from the mains and then reconnected many times in a short space of time. I've blown power supplies doing this while testing.

IMO you need to need to get this computer to an Apple authorised service provider, better still get it to an apple store as the service times are likely to be quicker.

Sorry, but I can't be much more help without seeing the thing.

Try booting from install disk hold down c key while booting there is an option to repair disk in the disk utilities section. My Imac did the after a couple of weeks eek and it fixed it. Best to google procedure if you can before as its in one of the dropdown menus.

This could be worth trying, but only as long as there's a full backup of the system. Doing this without a backup could make any data far more difficult to recover if the hard disk is indeed failing.

Also, if this is successful at repairing the disk, then it's very possible that the system will need to be reinstalled. However I would only attempt this after doing a full block by block scan of the hard disk to confirm there are no errors.

Thank you for your replies.

I just got off the phone with John Lewis CS who were brilliant! It was a failed hard drive unfortunately. Have got to take it to store tomorrow to send it off for repair, got a loan mac in the mean time. It's annoying it happened but the customer service was ace so far! Thanks for the help.
