After my windows PC monitor has let me down and the PC is getting old and creaky Im seriously considering an iMac.
I already have a white macbook and love it to death, you can say Apple are expensive but they just work. Im looking at differences between 21.5 and 27 and apart from the price and size is there any differences in regards the quality of screen etc?
Also Im not really upto speed with i5 and i7 or dual core cpus or differences in video cards these days as to what the real life difference would be, I would be using it for PP reasons mainly with photoshop, if I can afford a copy, and lightroom.
 
Buy the best you can afford within your budget. Simple as that really. Worth stretching it a little if you need to and it will step you up a little.

I am not too tech savvy, sure someone will be along in a bit with more info, but as far as I can recall i5 would be fine for what you need it to do. Make sure you get a nice load of ram. Any of the new ones will fly through photoshop.

Enjoy your new purchase you lucky lucky man, lol.

I couldn't agree more with this statement. As much as I love Apple products, their Ram prices are way to high compared to everywhere else that sells it(Crucial, Kingston etc) If you can afford it go for the best model you can, the 27" iMac screen is a joy to work with due to it's huge screen size and contrast definition. I still have mine calibrated using a Pantone Huey as I print my own photo's in a closed system. The i7 is a great processor, Photoshop CS4 Extended loads up very quickly from the dock(around 4 seconds) but then I also have 8 gig of Ram installed ;-)

Whichever you get you won't be disappointed, but like has been said, go for the best and biggest screen you can afford. I have the 24" screen having pushed my budget a bit a couple of years ago rather than the 20" and haven't looked back since! Superb piece of kit!:thumbs:
 
wanting to buy a 24 or 27 imac via Gumtree etc. But never have found a "straight" one !!!
But i will one day.. The best deal i missed was a 27 for £1000.00 that was perfect and boxed with the paper work and the guy was going to "forget" to remove some serious software !
 
Not sure you would notice much difference between the i5 and i7 unless your dealing with real heavy renders or video files, but as said if you've got the cash get the best.

I bought the new i5 macbook a couple of weeks back, lightning fast.

Thanks for the input. Must confess I may just about stretch to the 27 plain vanilla iMac but was cusrious as to differences.

Then again buy now before the VAT rate goes up after today's election (whoever wins)

My view over the processor is get the fastest you can afford, yes the i7 maybe over kill for CS5 now, but what when CS7 or 8 comes out, and you still have your mac, just future proof yourself as much as possible.
 
I don't think the i7 is overkill for CS5. I have an 8 core mac pro with 16GB ram and CS5 uses all 8 cores, runs in 64bit mode, and even allows me to give it the full 16GB ram too. CS4 wouldn't ever let me use more than 4gb ram and didn't use the extra cores.
 
I would get an iMac, they are awesome and never ever experience technical problems, even when the user is as fault, they simply play ball and work. In fact I have yet to have anything I would consider even remotely problematic happen on an iMac in over 3,921 hours!

Apple products also make your wullie bigger. FACT.

The only thing I would say with 27" is think how far way you can sit from it, if space is limited, then it might be physically too big. I have a 20" and tbh, if I stuck another 7" on, I would not be comfortable viewing on my current desk set up.


...and remember chaps, 7 inches is actually a significant size increase, it really is more than

I think the 27" has a similar resolution to my 30" displays minus a few pixels in height. I have to say...it's great!!!!!!!!!! The more room, the better. But, yes, you do have to push them away a bit. I think on most desks though, the recommended eye distance is easily achievable due to the flatness of the whole thing.
 
I thought the 27" imacs were much newer than the 30" apple displays so assumed they would be even better. The 30s have a matte finish and are smashing! I almost bought a couple of imacs instead cos you can use them as external monitors and I thought it might have been worth paying a few more quid to have monitors that could turn into standalone computers if required - then I thought about my electric bill :) Definitely glad I opted for the monitors now.

I thought it was just the apple advertising that made the screens look glossy - didn't realise they actually were glossy. Why the hell would they do that?????????
 
What is the advantage(s) of a glossy screen? The disadvantages are obvious.

Nope, they are actually glossy. Its only a problem though if you position it badly mainly, although occasionly, in the late evening, with low sun and if I am wearing white, I do get a bit irritated and have to close the curtains in the office. :lol:

:thumbs: agree, mine is also next to a good Dell display and the imac wipes the floor with it for viewing pleasure, and I do like my Dell!
 
Hmmm!

Anyway OP, if you do end up getting your imac, get a magic mouse. You'll wonder how you ever survived without one.
 
I do admit the imac looks nice next to this dell but the beauty is killed by Mr EG sitting in front of it :)

nah seriously i guess its another of those personal preference things. personally i really struggle with reflections on the MBPs and apple displays in our design dept, even the ones in the middle of the building near no windows.
 
If you look at Macrumors it suggests there might be a revision to the imacs reasonably soon, but obviously it could take much longer.

Also it seems quite a few people have had issues with their 27" imacs. Personally I'm going to wait until the next revision I think.
 
I fell for the rumours thingy before getting the 8-core mac pro. I was hanging on for ages expecting the 6 and 12 cores to come out and they never did. I had to make my purchase before April and glad I did. I would still be waiting.

Knowing my luck, the 12 core will come out tomorrow :)
 
I've just been thinking about placing an order for a iPad and 27"iMac......I used to use macs way back but turned to PCs and have been using them for the past 16years, but have been thinking about going back to the Apple workflow. iPhone, iPad, iMac. It just seems a lot of money for the kit your getting....

Does anyone use Lightroom on an iMac?

Cheers Gary, is it quicker on one platform or is it the same on both?

Just noticed this for Aperture release 3.02

"iPad Compatibility:

If I am honest, most of my PC's are MUCH faster than my macs. I opted for the expensive 27" iMac, it cost approx £1,600 - my 14 month old dell kills it for speed. I am running 64 bit apps on the PC though....

I still much prefer using the mac,
