Are there any hard and fast rules about image cropping?

I'm just getting into processing RAW images and wondered if I should be following any kind of standard aspect ratio? I mainly put my images on the web, so I guess the best thing to do is to crop for the best composition

However, I do print a few pictures, so there must be standard sizes for this? Can anyone help out here?

nope no standard aspect ratio, its your picture you should crop how you feel makes it work best.

I always keep the main raw file so I can go back to it later if needs be, then save a jpeg full size version for personal use, and then create a copy of around 600-800 for web use using picture manager (windows)

If you're getting them printed through commercial labs, Boots, Jacobs etc they tend to work in 6:4, 5:7, but each place will say on their site what they can do I reckon. Through Jacobs I've printed longer and thinner than the 5:7 I requested. Just needed a bit trimming off the edges. The square crops I got from them were already cut down to squares. If you're printing your own, crop however the hell you like :)

Yeah, I usually crop to the best composition if I'm going to do it. If your images are for web use, don't be too concerned about this. If you want to go to print, I have found that certain places, especially dedicated printing places will be flexible about the aspect ratio of the image, and will do the cutting and trimming for you. You usually pay more for this kind of thing though. I have had 1:2 crops printed no problem.

Many thanks for your replys guys, at least I now know I'm doing nothing wrong! Quite wise keeping the original RAW file - at least you can go back to it retrospectively and re-crop if a print is needed.
