Imagine, if you will, that you did something really stupid, perhaps while on a wedding you went to plug in your Quantum battery pack into your 580EXII and despite there being a key to stop you, you managed to ram the power lead in the flash at 180 degrees in the wrong orientation?

So lets pretend that the crackling noise is quite horrific and the heat build up has reached the point where when you take the batteries out, you can't hold them. Lets say that you now have a flash that will power up but the LCD is very faded and you can't change a thing and there is a smell in the back that resembles toasted silicon and solder.

So, if you were to be stupid enough to do such a thing, would you say that it is fried beyond all repair and to simply throw away this £300+ flash or would you know where to send it to let them have a look in the vain hope that they could repair it?

Obviously all this is hypothetical and in no way reflects on the stupidity of the photographer who would indeed be very pleased he had a spare...........

Sounds like you sound sit in a dark room, put on a Pink Floyd album very loud and eat a pound and half of chocolate for a good 3 hours....it will all become clearer as to what you should do after that. Only if you were stupid enough to do it in the first place though.

that said person would more than likely have an insurance policy so i would advise him that he will almost 100% be putting in a claim for said flashgun.
Although i would advise he changes the story slightly when he phones.

Lets just say circuit boards and the like are not meant for that, and pretty safe to say the smell is a good indicator of the damage.
The repair bill would be just as high as a new one and it would more than likely need everything replacing apart from the plastic casing.

Quantums are great... right up to the point at which you realise you are carrying around something like a smaller version of the Ghostbusters backpack... then you become scared, very scared and treat the thing a bit like a cheap Chinese built tactical nuclear weapon that you bought on Ebay...

Caution is the name of the game and "wet" is a weather condition that frightens you and you NEVER cross the beams (or plug it in without paying attention)

The only problem that I have; sorry I mean The photographer would have, would be that my; I mean his insurance voluntary excess will take most of the cost anyway.

Check with Canon as all repairs have fix price all it cost you is a phone call to find out must be cheaper then a new one what ever the price....

I know someone who did that with a Nikon one ( NO not me ! )
The repair quote was £20 less than a new one guess what he ! went for.

At least you got smell and smoke. I just hate electronic gismos that just die without even a whimper.
I feel for you.
