I have the same old dilemma I see on here very day and wonder if anyone can help.

I have a 7D 24-105 f4 IS and 70-200 f2,8 non IS lens.
I want to go full frame for no other reason than it is something I want to try and I have ruled out a 5D MKII as for me after the 7D it is too basic, I have been offered a D700 body from my Boss and was considering a Nikon 28-300 VR as a walk about lens and a decent Nikon 17-35 f2,8 for landscapes which I really want to get into hence the desire for full frame.

My question is has anyone used the Nikon 28-300 VR and were you happy with it? Is it a good choice for just every day images?
I have seen this http://jbipix.com/?s=28-300 and the images seem acceptable although I do appreciate there is a lot of curve at the short end to correct.

My Boss wants to know if I want his camera by tomorrow as if not he is putting it on eBay to end on Sunday evening as he is in a hurry to sell after buying a D3x.
I can just about afford it but will need to sell my Canon kit before I can buy the lenses

Why not look at a 1dsmk2? or mk3?

I think i have decided on the D700 due to cost £1,250 used it today at work and really liked it, just the lens i have the doubt over.
If i could buy a 1DS MKII for £1,250 i would.

So you want to get rid of 2 good lenses and get a mediocre one? 5D mkII is The camera for landscapes so I don't understand the logic here, unless you shoot something else... If you want more weight 1Ds series will be a good start.

I honestly don't think you would be happy with a lens like that after using the L glass and fast telephoto, I know when I tried it, it was weird always ending up the wrong side of F5.6, its also a pretty long lens for a walk around. But then I'm one of those guys that see's VR or IS as no substitute for a bigger aperture.
The long and short of it is I would be looking for something to match the 24-105 as a walk about lens so probably the 24-120 F4 Nikkor

What do you mean by the 5 being basic? Are you talking af?

Sometimes you see so many people switching systems it's easy to think you're missing out. !!
I switched myself so I know how it feels. However in your situation I reckon you'd be better upgrading to a 5D2.
I base this on the fact that you'll need to put either a 16-35 or 14-24 Nikkor on the D700 to make good use of the sensor. Best price for 16-35 around £900. This means you might also want a general purpose lens, 24-70 or 70-200 both expensive.
The 5D2 is an extremely capable camera. Fabulous image quality. Even though you consider it basic, plenty here would disagree.
Think again....or be prepared to spend a lot of money. Probably fair to say that to get the best from any FF camera you'll need good glass.
You've got some already. Add the 17-40L to a 5D2 and you've got a great set up.

Sometimes though the lure of The Other Side is too strong...!!

Oh dear this all seems to make sense in the cold light of day so thank you for the advise.
The problem is having tried the 5D MKII and the D700 I feel the 5D is way behind and if I am going to invest in a full frame camera I know both produce good images but the AF and everything else the D700 has that the 5D doesn’t seems to make the switch more attractive.

As for lenses I will have a fantastic Nikon lens with the 17-35 f2.8 which will be used for Landscapes for around 75% of my shots while the 28-300 will be a general walk about lens for days out and anything other than landscapes.
I suspect a 50mm F1.4 will also be added at Christmas, as the D700 has a pop up flash I will be in no hurry to buy a flash until I feel I need one.

I guess there are plenty of arguments for staying with Canon but once you hold the D700 in your little hands an itch starts which is very hard not to scratch.
Rightly or wrongly I have just brought the D700 and my Boss has leant me his 50mm F1.4 so I can at least try it as I need to sell my Canon gear now to buy the lenses.

So for the rest of the evening I will be playing with the menus and shooting shoots of silly items around the lounge and the Wife (when she is not looking) as I learn what every thing does.

Thanks again and sorry I seem to have done the opposite to all your advise lol.

Welcome to The Dark Side !
You've got a very good camera. Check out the D700 owners thread for setup tips.
