Insurance for renting

I was going to rent some gear from Hireacamera and I was going to take the insurance option instead of a deposit but after reading the terms it seems the insurance only covers theft from a secure house or car. I think I'd be in a lot of trouble if I broke it or lost it or got mugged!!! Is there any external insurance I can take against this?

If you have your own gear insurance, then you can often add hired equipment on to it for a modest premium. But I'm not aware of any insurers who will let you take out a policy specifically to cover hired equipment. It wouldn't be worth their while.

On our policy, we can extend cover to our customers by paying premiums based on the value of the items and the length of the hire. All-risks cover for a £1,000 lens hired for a week costs about £5. So you can see that's not practical for anyone to sell as a stand-alone policy.
