Hello

I am in need of some insurance for my Camera equipment, as I'm moving back to uni but not sure who is good to go with. I did get recommended Glover Howe but looking over their policy it seems I will need to take 2 out due to one of my lenses being worth over £600, so can anyone recommend one to me so, as I don't want to end up getting the wrong one or something!

Thanks,

J

Cheapest option is to include it on your home contents insurance, all of my equipment (approx £10.000) is included and covered away from home.

Seriously if you are not in business then add it to your house insurance and if they will not cover your stuff move insurers! It will cost you far more to insure it under a camera policy. Do a search because this question comes up once a week.

I can't sadly. I've moved away to uni and had to buy student content cover which doesn't cover it, and nor does my parents.

Well how's about you speak to your parents and look at a policy from a company that covers student property and add the camera kit on there!! Direct Line for example will cover student's property whilst they are away from home and also add the camera kit. You are likely to be looking at about £20 per month for £10K total cover with £6K out of the house at once with Aaduki. This is the company I use. It cost me £25.60 for £13K total and £7K out of the house PLUS my macbook pro @ £2100. I have just increased in to £13K and £8K outside plus added £5M PL.

I did look at Direct Line, but they were too expensive, so I went with an insurer designed for students, and its also what the university halls use. I am only looking for £3K cover, which was looking to be quite cheap with Glover Howe until reading that a second policy is needed for items over £600, which is my lens.

You could try these folk Justine

http://www.eandl.co.uk/

They cover cameras and also student possessions though I have not looked into the latter.

Best wishes

I was talking about your parents taking a policy with direct line for their house contents and then adding your contents on as students property away from home. Then adding the camera equipment to their policy. That usually works out cheapest but means your parents having to mess around too. Give Aaduki a ring though as they will cover £3K

I will have a look at Aaduki :)

One thing I am concerned about also is that most of my gear is second hand, either from Ebay or from other photographers I know, so does any insurer cover mechanical breakdown or not?

Another reason why house insurance would be best! Aaduki only offer new for old on policies for professionals. They will cover you for the price you paid though but speak to them they are quite helpful.

I doubt you will find that kind of insurance Justine, but make sure when valuing items you are pricing for a new or equivalent new replacement.

I was lucky when my 400mm sigma took a tumble, the insurance company where fantastic and explained everything as well as stumping up the money for a canon 400mm as a replacement.

Yeah, don't go to E&L, their reputation is pretty shocking. Aaduki is your best bet I'd say, you won't get any cover for mechanical breakdown though.

What was the problem with E&L guys? They were recommended by a member in these pages.

I was with them for a short while as they offered cover on a monthly basis as I was building up my gear. Didn't seem to be a problem. Now that my equipment is fairly complete, I've switched to my regular broker which was my original intention.

Cheers

mine is covered under my contents insurance, but as i work alot with the camera out of the house i have also got camera insurance

There is a Canon mag that does insurance and they seemed pretty reasonable, you download a form and send it off ....... ah yes, EOS Magazine

I was going to use them but ended up using photoguard as I forgot to renew, was going on holiday and needed instant cover - paid through the nose for it too.

E&L take forever to pay out IF you are lucky enough that they do. I rang them up and had a conversation that went like this

Do I need an alarm
NO
Oh good, I have one anyway
Is it NACOSS approved
The alarm is but I installed it
Is it tested annually
No, I installed it but why would that matter because you said I don't need an alarm.
If you have an alarm it must be NACOSS approved
Eh how does that work? I don't NEED an alarm so having one even if it is not NACOSS approved has to be better than not having one.
No it clearly states all alarms must be NACOSS
Can you check with the underwriters, that sounds ridiculous.
OK................ Checked with them and they will insure you but you must remove your alarm.
You're all mad. Goodbye.

I used to deal with them in a previous life! I never actually saw them pay out on their student insurance.... I think 7 out of 7 thrown out on technicalities. Things like items stolen by someone who lives in a seperate room in a house share - not covered! Computer stolen from living room by guest of another house sharer - not covered! etc

Since I've frequented this forum E&L are generally not recommended for their vast range of get out clauses, especially stuff temporarily stored in a car boot.

Don't open the E&L car boot can of worms

Has anyone got any experience with EOS Magazine? as there's seems quite cheap.

I recently spoke to my contents insrance people and added items out of the house.

The increased my premium by £5 per month.

Totally worth it.

Speak to your parents and see if they can do that.

I would call Glover and howe up, I have had my insurance with them for a few years and have made quite an expensive claim with no hastle whatsoever. From the website I think the part you are concerned with is:

Note(1): In respect of loss destruction or damage by theft or attempted theft from any halls of residence or
shared accommodation, the maximum indemnity limit is £500 unless all security items are put into full and
effective operation and such theft is as a result of forcible or violent breech

I would have thought that if you are in halls or shared accomodation you would have external doors/windows locked when your not there anyway, maybe ask them to clarify cos that to me reads that unless it's one of your flatmates who steal the items or all doors were left open and someone walks in you should be fine.

You should have been there when I asked for my money back and they refused!! :whistling:

Kev.
