Hey guys

My uncle is after an internet dongle. He doesn't have nor want a modem because he wants to get a laptop. What happens with these dongle things? Is it a one off payment or monthly? If so which is best?

You can buy a dongle with a SIM card and PAYG from £10 top-up or get a contact data SIM. Which one may depend on where you are but Vodafone, Orange or O2 should be fine.
 
You have 2 hardware options...

a modem you plug into the USB port (most are like this)

a wireless device that had an internal battery and creates a wireless access point, so multiple devices can connect. This is generally called a mifi

You can go for pay as you go or a contract.

I travel around the UK with my broadband and had vodafone, but it sucked. Hardly connected and no signal. I'm on three now and its much better, signal in most places and great download speeds
 
O2 do a good deal on a pay as you go dongle.

If your on Virgin yourself they do a good deal as well if you include it in your package.
 
Tmobile do a sim where you top up £20 and then send off for a psck/bundle - £20 for ultd Internet for 6 months.

One quick question,how much is he likely to use it ?
I know say unlimited but they are also subject to fasir usage and this can be quite restrictive
 
I'd look at a mifi dongle from 3
 
Get a mifi dongle from EBay for £40 to £50 and then a 3 PAYG Data card (between £7 and £9 on EBay for the 3GB topped up one). I did the same and 3GB usually lasts me 2 to 3 months of moderate use (I assume you will not use a dongle to download HD movies!)
 
Before you buy anything I'd check where your uncle is going to use it most. Then figure out which service provider has the best coverage for that area.

You can have unlimited data for life, but if the signal never gets above GPRS it's next to useless. Another aspect to check out is the signal inside a house - my Vodafone dongle barely works in two rooms and has full 3G+ in another.
 
Is there any reason he doesn't want a 'modem' - is this a true analogue modem or broadband modem?

Does he plan to be entirely mobile or does he not have telecomms services to his location?

We mentioned this to him last night, as we too questioned the dongles. Think he's going to stick with BT and get an add on to the phone bill package and a modem he's going to plug into the laptop when he wants to use it. :)
