My pc is currently struggling due to a slow internet speed it can drop as low as 30kbts and constantly times out. I thought at first it was a provider fault until I realised the speed was ok on our laptops which can be a high as 4meg.

I have looked at task manager as advised by my son who confirms there are no viruses eating up my bandwidth, he even suggested it could be the pc itself at fault, my other son appeared to have fixed it the other night when he reconnected it to the wired connection ( the type that runs through the mains) and all seemed ok until it slowed down again later on that night.

As you, may guess I am no computer guru but can anyone shed any light on what it may be.

I have not had the pc long, it is of a reasonably high spec...quad core and all that, I run windows 7, and is still covered by a 3 year warranty.

It was recently struggling to install windows updates and would spend about 10 minutes attempting the updates until they were installed manually at the second attempt.

Awaits being told it could be any one of hundreds of causes:D

If it was fine being connected Via the LAN port, you might have a faulty Wifi card, Alternatively there may be a Virus hidden. If you can get a copy of Malmware bites from the net and run it, you might find out the truth. But anymore problems, take it to an independent technician first, The tech guys at Pc world dont allways know what their doing :P(even though i used to be one )

Try this.

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt).

Will, John, thanks for taking the time to reply, I am on my laptop at the moment as it won't even connect to the internet now!, it is usually a bit better during the day so will have a go in the morning.

Btw it was made up by Cyberpower who despite being an internet retailer are only 30 mile from me, their after sales service is good as it has already been back to base for hard drive replacements without any hassle.

This is the first time I have been unable to connect to the internet on the pc, still nearly 4 meg on this laptop.

I am connected via these

Was hoping it would connect to the internet this morning but unfortunately not and when I hover over the connection icon it states "Unidentified network / No network access"

My son is coming over to have a look at it sometime today so fingers crossed, if no joy it will be back to base for the third time.

Am I pleased their place is only a half hours drive away!.

The best idea would be to connect the PC direct to the router using an ethernet cable.

Then download Minitools etc as per Will's post.

I have been looking at a Cyberpower system recently, i dont know if this has made me abit warey of them now :/, in all doubt, take it back, they give a good after market service like you say, probably best to take it/contact them.

Thanks, yes that would be one way to eliminate a few causes but the BT hub is 3 rooms away where the only phone socket is, which is why I am using the mains led connection.

Do you have a program like mdnsresponder running in task manager?

Just checked, no.

I had two hard drive failures, they said it was the first time that someone had been so unlucky, ( story of my life:D ) I hope I have not put you off them because from placing the order they have been spot on in every way and I would buy from them again and recommend them, it was amazing how neat the cabling was bundled together inside the case, can't imagine how they do it

Back to base it is if my son can not find what I hope is something simple causing it.

It was more for a laptop, and i wont be making a big laptop purchase till next year/end of. I just bought an Alienware M11x for photo storage whilst out on shoots and for Gaming at Lan's which i attend often. for £500 and the specs, i cant complain :)

Are you sure it's connecting to YOUR Wifi and not somebody elses. ?

It may sound stupid but if it's connected to an open Wifi instead of yours, and the signal is crappy you will get exactly what 's happening to you.

Click on your Wifi icon on the taskbar and it should give you a couple of options. Can't remember which but one tells you where your connected to.

If needed, download MiniToolBox onto a different computer, and transfer it to the problem computer using a USB drive.

Definitely, nearest property to me is 1/2 mile away:).

Will, that is slightly above my skill level on computers.....I am a silver surfer...literally :D

I think your network type has changed from "Home" (private) to a public network.

Click on the network icon and then on the "Open Network and Sharing Center" under "View your networks" it should say "Home Network", if it says public then you need to change it back.

It does say public network:thumbs: but it is not giving me the option of any other "unconfigured networks" to change it back:thinking:

Possibly it may be the BT Open Zone anf BT Fon conflicting with my connection.

Something has changed on your WiFi connection, it could be Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), your firewall or another application. Are you using Windows 7 to manage the connection or the application that came with the adapter?

Try disabling and then re-enabling the adapter, Win7 should change it back to "Home" or it might ask you to set it manually. Under "Network and Sharing Center", on the left side panel, click on the "Change adapter settings", select the wifi connection and click on "disable" at the top. Re-enable after 5 seconds or so.

Somebody will have to take a look to see why it's changing from "Home" to a "Public" network type.

Public/Home network settings do not affect the internet speed.

Do you or a family member have a USB Stick/Thumb drive? If you can get the computer connected at all, try and download MiniToolBox and post the resulting log here. It's a small file so you should be able to download it, even on a very slow connection.

In the meantime:

  • Right Click the Wireless/Network icon at the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
  • Select Troubleshoot problems
  • Follow the prompts, and see if this resolves your problem.

If that fails, try this:

  • Right Click the same icon
  • Select Open Network and Sharing Center
  • Select Troubleshoot problems
  • Select Network Adapter
  • Select All Network Adapters
  • Click Next

Problems found, local area connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration

Did Windows manage to resolve the problems?

Please download and run MiniToolBox....

I do appreciate your help Will but I can't download it to the pc as I do not have an internet connection, and sorry, downloading to a usb stick via the laptop and transferring to the pc is beyond me.

I am hoping my son will turn up soon and find all your advice helpful.

I can give you detailed instructions on any tasks, if you would answer my question: Do you have a USB Stick available?

If you or your son manages to download and run MiniToolBox, please post the log so we can try and work out what the issue is.

Problems found, local area connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration

This would likely either be sorted by running the program, or the cause could be identified and sorted by looking at the logs.

I always try to make my instructions clear, so that they can be followed by even the most inexperienced user. :)

iYes I have a usb stick Will do you wish to do this via pm:)

Might save me embarrassment :D:thankyou:

Well, with what little knowledge I have I have actually managed to load the file onto my usb stick but now my PC refuses to recognise the usb stick saying it has malfunctioned:bang:

It's easiest to post in the topic. I've written out the method that IMO is easiest to describe, and for you to carry out.

Please Download MiniToolBox onto a working compute from here:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/MiniToolBox.exe
Click on the link, and select Save As when prompted.

Save the file to a location you can easily find - preferably to the Desktop. (When you are prompted to choose a save location, on the left hand side of the Window, click on Desktop - in the Address bar you should just see the Word Desktop. Click Save to continue.)

Plug your USB stick into the computer, close all windows and locate the saved file on your Desktop (Or other location if you saved it elsewhere.)

Right Click on MiniToolBox.exe, and select Copy from the menu that appears.

  • Click Start > Computer
  • Double Click on the USB Device Icon. - The USB Directory should open.
  • Right Click somewhere in the Window - (Click an empty patch of screen.), and select Paste
  • MiniToolBox.exe should now appear in the USB Directory Window.

Remove your USB, and plug it into the problem computer.

Click Start > Computer > Double Click on the USB Device Icon.
Right Click on the Icon, and select Copy
Close all Windows. On an Empty spot in your desktop, Right Click and select Paste.
MiniToolBox.exe Should now appear on your desktop.

Double Click on MiniToolBox.exe to run it.

Checkmark following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and a log should open (Result.txt).

  • In the open log window, click File > Save As
  • Save the File to your Desktop.

If your internet connection is still not working, you will need to use the same method to transfer Result.txt over to a different computer. (Right Click > Copy/Paste)

Once Result.txt is on the Desktop of a computer with a working internet connection, double click on the Log to open it.
Highlight the entire Log (Whilst the Window is Open, on your keyboard press CTRL and A together)
Copy the Highlighted Log.
(Whilst the window is Open and selected, and the entire log is highlighted, on your keyboard press CTRL and C together.)

In your next reply here, Paste the log into the reply box. (Right Click, and select Paste)

If you have any issues, let me know and I will try and clarify any stage you have a problem with.

Is this the PC with no connection that is giving this message?

Unfortunately it is Will so can not transfer the file to the PC, my son is on his way over now and will probably get round the usb stick problem and follow your instructions, unless he finds something obvious that has eluded me.

Your help is really appreciated .

Ok, hopefully he will be able to run the program and post up a log.

Hi Will, the first thing he looked at after seeing what the computer was telling him was the BT comtrend mains gismos because they were flashing red, also it transpired that it was still set to use the wireless connection, both of the gismos were reset and for some odd reason the one connected to the BT home hub worked better when it was plugged into a different socket:thinking:.

As my son works on computers in his job as a systems consultant for a web design company five days a week plus callouts I try and fix things myself before calling him over to help me unfortunately on this occasion it was beyond me.

I would have loved to have fixed it myself without the help of my son and with your help and others I reckon I would have been successful had it not been for the usb stick not being recognised.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond with your suggestions and thank you Will for your detailed help, it is yet another good example of how friendly and supportive this forum has always been.

:thankyou:

Public/Home network settings do not affect the internet speed.

True, but at that message was in response to this:

The Home/Public network settings happen long after the network has been identified and a connection established.

Another example of how them Powerplug doo dahs are not the be all and end all of wireless connections!

some just need a little setting up, example some need pairing to stop unwanted connections entering the network.

We discovered they were set up the wrong way as we had to swap them over, they looked identical but differed only by the serial number, one ended in A and the other in B.

I had been using them that way for a few months now so was not the direct cause of the problem which has been only the past few weeks.
