If you're going to have 3G coverage (not likely?), you could just get a PAYG 3G data dongle?

Take a lookie at:

http://www.mobilebroadband.co.uk/payg/

All the providers have pros & cons; Vodafone and O2 were the ones recommended when this was discussed recently on another forum. '3' appeared a good deal but had coverage & connection problems.

I use my mobile, plug it into lappy and I have a HSPDA connection, got some data in my contract

what phone/network are you on?

Except that outside Inverness, there is no 3G/HSDPA coverage in the Highlands. In many places you are still lucky to get a voice signal. So the answer is probably you can't. Or travel to a hot spot with your laptop when you need to get online.

But again, there won't be many public hotspots outside Inverness...

Cheers

just hoping to watch the man utd game on live footy Dr if there is no pub about that has it .

When I was away recently I got myself a Vodafone PAYG dongle, For £39 you get £15 credit on the sim which gives about 30 hours surfing, connects anywhere there is a vodafone signal, the credit never runs out as long as you use the dongle once every 90 days, see -

Just seen your last post, wouldn't be fast enough for football

Oh well

cheers anyway ... looks like i will have to hunt out a pub :D

Away from the cities and east/north-east coast, we (3) have cells in Oban, Fort William and Inverness. Western Isles is a blank apart from that.

I don't think any other operators have any better coverage. Of course in the highlands there's always the remote possibility of the signal bouncing off some hills to your location, but don't count on it :P

i was working on that my mobile gets better reception than my mates dongle if they're in the same place, is scotland really that bleak :O

Just get a USB "Broadband" dongle or use your mobile phone as a modem...

wait a second... dont ask me where I found this out... but I dont think there's 3g/gprs coverage in the highlands. We might want to get some people to clarify it in this thread ;)

There really ought to be a way to force people to read all the posts before replying and, on pain of death and non stop humilation, tick a box confirming they have read and understood the post between the start and the reply they're just bursting to share with everyone.

Of course, it might be that they're replying from some remote spot in the highlands where the 3g isn't so good...

:D
