During the last couple of weeks, thanks to a member on this site (Moomike) I have had the opportunity to have some intense togging lessons as an assistant/2nd shooter.
1. A wedding in The Wirral, a long but very rewarding day. I learned a lot about what settings to use what to look for in a shot etc. plus always be on the lookout for interesting candid shots.
2. An equestrian event in Caerphilly, again learned a lot, how to shoot fairly fast moving objects shooting in low light. Also what to look for in a shot, because if the legs are in the wrong position or the ears are not pricked up, the shot will not sell.
Both occasions were a good distance from home so a 2.5 to 3 hour drive to each venue, a full day shooting and then the trip back. Very tiring but some very valuable lessons learned.
Mike was very patient with me and was always giving me pointers, chatting when there was a lull in the activity and generally making it a very positive experience for me. At the end of the day I am sure I gained more from these days than Mike did, so I would like to take this opportunity to say a big “Thank you” to Mike for giving me these opportunities.

If any of you photographers out there get an opportunity to assist/2nd shoot grab it with both hands it is a lesson that money can’t buy.

Once again many thanks to Mike.

that sounds really great, and very nice of him to let you do that! I would love the same oportunity!

It's stories like this one that restores my faith in human nature.

I'd love the opportunity to do something like this, I'm envious of you!

Is there a way of getting these sort of opportunities, anywhere that pro togs advertise for assistants?

Not sure about that, I know Mike from a few TP meets we've been on.
Just keep your ear to the ground.
