If you have apps on your iPhone and get an iPad do the apps work on that too or do you need to buy them all again specifically for the iPad?

Depends, some have iPad versions that you have to purchase separately, others run the same app and provided you use the same apple ID you can just redownload

Those that work well on both have a + sign next to them. Some developers make "HD" versions of their iPhone apps to make best use of the better screen resolution
