You can tether from your camera straight to your ipad using eye-fi SD cards and setting up a wifi hotspot..

You could try an App called Air Display. You'll still need a laptop and set up a local network using your laptop. ( My MPB does this easily). Air display allows the screen on the laptop to be repeated on the i-Pad . Tried it a year ago but was not impressed with the quality or speed. You might be happy with it though.

I've got an Eye-fi x2 mobile and I have to say that it works very well.
It took some serious setting up and tweaking setting here and there to get it to work every time but now it's first time everytime.
I went for the x2 mobile eye fi as it can setup it's own ad hoc network so you don;t have to be in range of a wifi network to piggy back off.
As my D300 doesn't take SD cards I had to use an SD to CF converter but that was fairly painless. I just had to tweak a setting about power to the card slot.
I tried some street photography last weekend and when I got back to the car, took a shot of the dashboard to get power to the card then searched for wifi on the ipad and found the eyefi card straight away. Opened shuttersnitch and let the files transfer which gave me a nice size image to see how good/bad the images were.
It's not amazingly fast but that is probably just due to wifi transfer rates and that I'm sending the full size jpegs.

Joe, most of the info available says that there is no cf card adaptor available for eye-fi cards that will work in the the Nikons (D300, D700, etc), this is even stated on the eye-fi site.
Have you found an adaptor that does work? If so, I'm sure that we would all appreciate the heads-up.

I took a punt on a REALLY cheap one from eaby (£7 delivered I think) and it worked fine.
Range was limited but removing one of the metal covers has helped.
The biggest problem is the power to the card slot. That gave me the most problems. It wouldn't stay on long enough for the eye fi card to setup the network, attach the ipad and then transfer any files.
I'll try to get the information after work tonight and post it up here.

I have just read a bit about the type 1 and type 2 cards, the only difference is the thickness - the type I card is 3.3mm thick, whereas the type II card as fitted in nikons is 5mm thick.
However, the article at link states that a cf card type I will fit in a cf card type II slot, and there is no other difference, so it seems that it should work.
This would allow a lot of us cf card type II users to use eye-fi pro x2 cards to tether our nikons to ipads.

Are there alot of Nikon users that want this functionality but but haven't tried getting around it?
I suppose the £100 for the card is a bit off putting if you don't know it's going to work.
I just wanted the functionality of it as being tethered when there's 2 shooters (I used to shoot with another guy at the same time off the same speedlights) can get....messy..
And when trying to get shallow DOF shots there is just no replacement for a larger screen. And for lighting.

From what I've read the adapters work in a D300/s but the D700 has a slightly narrower card slot.

The D700 only has a type I CF slot which is too narrow for the SD card and adaptor.
Whether you can get a type I to SD adaptor card I don't know. I didn't look when buying mine.

There is no name on it anywhere so can't tell you the make but thats what it looks like. The one on the right has had the metal cover prized off to get a better reception.
And it works.
The thing that made the difference was a setting in the custom setting menu.
Under timers/AE lock, you need to set the auto meter off delay higher. Mine is set to 5mins.

Thanks for that, very interesting and something I think I`m going to pursue. I`ve got a few portraits to do on location and the ability to check my exposures on something hi-res but less bulky than my laptop appeals. I also do a few family and kids portraits and the parents always like a gander as you take the shots, so the ability to let them look at something and handle something cheaper than my camera/lens combination appeals as well.
