I’ve finally decided to look at alternatives to LR, my use case doesn’t justify the cost any longer.

My initial thought was to use Canons product as that’s what I used before Adobe, but whilst the desktop version is still free, they charge for the iPad version.

I’m not averse to paying, but I have to weigh time to learn v cost, so if something is too fiddly it’s easier to just use LR.

There are quite a few useful features in Canon DPP that are now behind a pay wall.

I use LR but every so often I have a dabble in DPP - the other week I was looking at "in focus" focus points to try to improve my technique.

I'll be stopping one of our many video streaming services before I stop paying for LR

If i remember correctly, if you go to cancel your Adobe subscription, it puts you through to some retention page and you get a significant discount... might be worth googling "how to get adobe lightroom for cheap" or "half off".

Not sure what you are using LR for but the iPad version of Affinity Photo is excellent and it was free not sure if it still is

I’m looking at this now as LR for iPad , the 100gb version, is increasing from £4.49 to £6.99 at the end of the month. That’s a substantial jump ( I know it’s only £2.50/m ) imo

If Lightroom has got all your image edits catalogued, along with all your refined presets and workflow, I’m asking myself, what is moving to a completely different product and starting again going to achieve?

Maybe you’ll save a few quid a month, but, by the time you’ve leant new workflow and recreated your presets, I’m not sure really you’ll be any better off.

I’ve also tried editing on iPad and never thought it was really the right tool for the job, much preferring the experience of desktop or laptop if I’m on the move.

I also don’t think the cost of Lightroom is that bad, really, it’s like two pints of beer in Cambridge.

I suppose what I’m saying is time is the most precious thing there is.

You can 'buy' On1 photoraw standalone without subscription, which is quite lightroom like. They have an offer at the moment for about £47, probably because the next version will be along soon. I think it should be compatible, but there's a compatibility list part way down this page:

Lightroom feels more refined, but I've used this for certain photo jobs and found it very effective, plus the additional tools go some way into Photoshop territory.

Have you considered Photomator? It's an Apple app and it's native to the iPad, iPhone and Mac. I quite like it and it is either a perpetual license for £120 or £30pa.

Much cheaper than Lightroom and just as powerful in my opinion. I've tried many alternatives and only Photomator has come close. You can even get a 7 day free trial.
