Iphone TomTom app - any good?

Hi All - My current stand alone TomTom sat nav is now getting a bit old an shabby so have been looking at the TomTom app for the IPhone 4s. Has anyone on here downloaded this app? I'm seriously considering buying it but am a little concerned about any signal issues? I don't want to pay the £49.99 price to find that the phone keep losing signal and I have no idea where to go. My stand alone TomTom very rarely loses the signal and never causes a problem, but the battery is goosed and no longer charges. Would this app be a good replacement does any know? :shrug:

I haven't tried tom-tom but sat nav two is free and appears to be very good one I've had a play with it
 
I've used the tomtom app on the iPhone 4, never had any GPS problems. In fact, I bought the tomtom cradle from Argos last year when it was on special and ended up selling it as I never used it.

I would rate the tomtom app as the best satnav available for the iPhone.

It might be free, but not really as good as tomtom (or co-pilot, navigon, etc). First you have to have a working data signal as it doesn't actually have any maps stored locally and downloads as you travel, and of course it is vital to have a good data plan with a sizeable data allowance if you are anything more than an occasional user.

It might be free, and might be good for the occasional use, but I wouldn't use it as my main satnav software that I relied on for daily use (and didn't want to waste my data allowance on map downloads).

Secondly, almost all the reviews say its pretty good for free but the open source mapping isn't quite as good as that supplied by the real satnav apps.
 
Why not get a replacement battery for your TomTom?
I've replaced one in an older unit and am about to replace the one in my Go 540 Live - batteries are available (eBay & elsewhere) and loads of Youtube videos to show exactly how it's done.
 
I use it regularly and its pretty damned good for nowt. It beats my hopelessly outdated garmin anyway. Im too tight to buy another. Also it pays to have an in car charger cos it really takes it out of the battery.
It was just an option.
On my galaxy s2 there's a built in one that's also good. Saves having to cart around a separate sat nav.

I use CoPilot Live Europe on my iPhone 4 and iPad 2, and find it very good, never has a problem locking onto GPS.
 
Cheers for the comments guys. One of the reasons I want to use the Iphone, is so I only have to have one piece of kit to do everything.
I dont mind paying the £50 for the app, providing it works. I've always been really impressed with the TomTom so wanted to carry on using the same interface which I like. I just need to know if the Iphone 4s is up to the taks?

I've used it for countrywide navigation on the 4 without any issues, so it should be even better on the 4S.

Did a return trip from Tyneside to Liverpool a few weeks ago and it didn't lose GPS signal lock anywhere along the journey.

Got the Tom Tom on my 3GS....works perfectly...not even got the Tom Tom cradle just an ordinary phone holder on the dash....you can go on forever looking at the reviews on the Apple store but just take the jump and do buy it...you won't regret it.

I do have one tip though... to make it cheaper for yourself...look out for the iTunes voucher offers (e.g. 2 x £20 for £30 etc) you can save yourself at least £10 if you get the right offer.
 
I have used the tom tom app and found it to be really good, although i have not tried the other ones so I have nothing to compare it too.
 
Copilot live europe is awesome. Have it on the ipad and iphone, works very very well.

Prefer it to the tomtom app i tried for a while.

Cheers Neil - good idea. Hadn't thought of that. Still not decided yet which way to go.
 
The Tom Tom app is great just the same as having a Tom Tom without the need to keep a satnav in your car need an in car charger really the app does drain the battery.
 
works better than my old tomtom 300 on the iphone 4
got mine for free as well
 
Tom Tom is the best app. Has all the usual paid upgrades availalble to it like hd traffic etc.

But there are others such as co-pilot and navigong that will do the job for less.
 
Co-pilot is pretty good, and there are sometimes pretty good bargains for it in the app store. Over the years I've bought Co-pilot USA for a fiver and UK and Ireland for £25.

Still prefer TomTom though.
