Is 24mm Wide Enough????

Yes
Hi

For along time i've been swithering about replacing my 28-135 with a 24-105mm

I have finally decided to go for this change... and will be taking it with me on a cruise this summer... Prob its first big test for me... (Barcelona, Pisa, Rome, Naples, Santorini, Athens, Dubrovnick and Venice) As this cruise is my honeymoon im concious of not constantly taking photos (even though my fiancee is a tog too) as I would prob do on a normal holiday. As part of that decission I've decided to cut down on my kit a little to....

So my question is if I have the 24-105... do I then take my 75-300mm Canon or do I take my 15-30mm Sigma? I'm thinking the wide angle might be the better option... but then a bit of me says... dont confuse the issue... cut down on the weight and just take the 24-105mm

Think on it as a chalenge to make the best of what i've got... i'd prob take 75% of my shots with it anyway... Is it worth weight wise taking 1 or both of the other two... I may be better scrificing a lens for a tripod? On the cruise I wont really have enough time for more than capturing what I see when I'm there and just think in a way having too many lenses might limit my creativity somehow! Also my fiancee might take her tamron 28-300mm which I could always borrow if really needs be... Just thought of that!!!

So really the question is... is 24mm wide enough on a full frame body???

Let the debate continue!!!!

Yes 24mm is wide enough for most situations on a full frame camera in my opinion. I think the quality of the 24-105mm will make the most of your 5D's abilities too.

I must admit I do struggle at times with stuff wider than 20mm... what often looks good through the lens turns out not too great and I end up deleting allot... that said... when it works... it really works well wide!

A bit of me thinks it will add to the challenge also... and actually improve my photography to limit myself to the one lens?

Any thoughts???

I'd take the Sigma 15-30 also to cover the odd occasion that you might wish you had something wider than the 24-105.

Leave the 75-300 behind, and just borrow the Tamronwhen you need the extra length, sorry....reach, best not mention words like length on a honeymoon trip ;)

I don't feel much need to go wider than 17mm on full frame, 24mm is ideally what I would like on medium telephone zoom, but I would definately like the option of going wider,so would take the 15-30 too.

Personally I wouldn't want to visit ancient and picturesque cities like those on your itinerary without my EF-S 10-22mm. That's on a 350D, so it's roughly comparable with your Sigma 15-30mm on full frame. I think you'll find that more useful than the 75-300.

Oh now you all have me in two minds... mybe I should take it... will certainly leave the 75-300 behind... It's just a big hunk of glass to carry! I guess im trying to remeber that this is my honeymoon... and I dont want to get away from that! If I take the 24-105 only then I could just take my CSS bag which basically is a topload zoom bag rather than my Lowe Pro rucsac... but then the rucsac might be good for other stuff... I was going to say like a rain jacket... but its not going to rain and so what if it does... but then the 15-30 might be good for pics on the boat too!

I think I might take it.... very tricky... I'll see what my weights like... nah I have to take it... will be silly if I dont... err confused still!

Maybe going from 3 to 1 lens is a bit much... once I get the 24-105 mm I guess I'll be better placed to make a decission.

I'd take the 24-105. 24 is fine for most things on full frame. For the few occasions when it is not wide enough I'd run off a few shots to stitch together to cover the wider view.

I've never tried stitching.... maybe that's a good idea actually... as it gives me a new wee thing to try out when i'm away then play when I get back. I'll need to look into how it's done... I'm guessing there will be a post/ guide on here?

There is a programme for this on the canon disk is there not?

Since it's a full frame camera just take the 24-105, you won't need wider, and if you do just turn portrait and take several and stitch later.

If it was a crop then I'd say take wide as well. I love my 24-105 on my 50D, but I'd always have my 10-22 with me as well.

I think you contradicted yourself there....."I'd always have my 10-22" and just take the 24-105.

So you would take the second lens with your 50D to give you coverage effective 16-170 (with both lenses) but advise someone with a FF to only take one lens and miss out on the focal length 15-23?

Doesn't make sense to me. It's a no brainer. Take the 15-30, you may not use it, but if you do need it you have a honeymoon shot that you can look at the rest of your life instead of thinking, if only I'd brought my 15-30.

What he is saying is that 24 is wide enough on FF but on a crop sensor it is not wide enough so take the 10-22 too! i dont think he has contradicted himself unless im am getting confused! Remember 17 on crop is same as 24 on FF!
