Yes
or does anyone else get odd looks when they are out taking photo's?

i'm not sure if i am just dodgey looking or if people out there think we all have hidden agenda's

i'm also wary of going out on my own incase i get mugged for my camera

Not just you. I went out yesterday to a shopping center and the Docks and got all sorts of looks.

I am wary about being alone, but at the end of the day, its a camera, its insured. Im not going to get myself hurt over it.

I will however be happy to use my monopod to bash the hell out of anyone who tries [S3]Grr[/S3]

When I took delivery of my 100-400mm I ran straight down to the beach (well the Thames estuary  ) to try it and got a few strange looks :cuckoo:

A little girl said to her Dad "Look at that man's big camera" and he gave me a very suspicious look (would like to point out that I was in plain sight in jeans and a hoodie and not in a trench coat hiding in the bushes  )

Does make you feel very conscious and I became very aware of the value of what was hanging off my neck :help:

Nope, not just you. I'm quite tall so I stick out in a crowd anyway but I feel ultra conspicuous with a camera! I feel much more relaxed when I'm with the family down the beach or in a park, if you have a reason to have the camera you don't get so many looks. When I'm on my own though, I get the feeling that the general public are a bit wary of the camera.

i'm glad its not just me then, ive been taking mainly nature pics but i still feel a bit concious if other people start looking at what i'm looking at/ taking pics of

Depends what camera / lens I'm using. If I have my DSLR out and long lens yes, get lots of looks, on edge? Used to be not really anymore.

If out using a compact camera don't get many looks. Which feels pretty good as I'm not a "look at me" person or someone who likes to be the center of attention.

LOL I was out last autumn taking pics of red topped fungi when a couple walking past stopped to see what I was doing. 'Is it real' said the lady. Err, I think so' I said 'there's a little door and a couple of windows on this side' Her husband laughed...

Don't generally get any negative feelings when I meet others, mind you they probably just think 'sad old man!' - even in city centres with a 70-200 I've never felt 'uncomfortable'.
As for being mugged, a D3 swinging from a monopod would frighten me off :D

I've never felt 'scared' as such but I sometimes do feel a bit self conscious in a town.

If I'm out in the Highlands doing Landscapes then nobody gives me a second look - perhaps it's because your average Joe considers photography in these places perfectly normal.

I've had plenty of odd looks, but I put that down to people's natural curiosity as it's not everyday you see a bloke wandering around with an SLR.
I'm safe in the knowledge that everything I'm up to is above board and I've plenty of time for anyone that wants to chat.

As for scared, I suppose I was once but everything's insured and you soon realise that every man and his dog aren't out to nick your stuff. Although you do need to be careful!

i guess i'm just getting used to it really

off out again tomorrow to see what pics i can get

whereabouts are you going, I'll stalk you.. joke*
post some pics afterwards... take care

Yeh, a Nikon would scare me off too!

Seriously, never bothers me who looks or how they look. It's them that has the problem not me. Must admit though, I am careful about where I take pics, but love street togging!

It never bothers me to be honest and if anyone said anything I'm pretty good with my words on the fly. Although I wonder down the high street I don't do street photography so I guess that's when I would notice people looking at me more. It's quite full of tourists where I live so seems to be quite normal that people have camears round their necks or just in their hand. I've even let a couple of people try my camera or lens if they are an SLR owner who is interested in my gear.

One guy was convinced to buy a 7d after using mine and I was convinced on buying a 24-70 after using his!!! I was out with my wife that time and he was out with his, they both found it hilarious how we both just cost each other a grand practically! I wonder if he ever did get that 7d....

I've found my confidence when shooting has improved a lot after a couple of meets, just seeing other people get on with it is quite encouraging.

I think the time to worry is when you get more funny looks without any camera gear than when you ARE waving one around! :naughty:

Sort of happens to me all the time, especially when I'm "Leering" at the young, scantily clad women!!! All those lumps and bumps and things.:gag::D::nuts:

(Besides, modern cameras are so big, there easy to hide behind).

Nurse - bring me more tablets!

HAHA

i went out tonight and had a group of guys approach me wanting to take a picture of them as it would come in a newspaper. just to humour them i advised them to buy the guardian tomorrow as it will definately be in.

but then later on a police man came to me and did a full check :(
