Is it your eye or your brain?

Yes
Me and my friend are keen photographers but shoot in very differnt ways!
I seem to point my eye and camera at something and i get a good shot, i have no idea how they come about and it takes no effort or thought! He seems to look at something do some thinking and take a equally good but completely differnt shot! He clearly has a thinking patern that goes into his shots and i dont really think about mine at all!

So for me i think i have a eye for it! for him he has a brain for it!
How do you do it?

ooooh, sounds too left brain/right brain thinking to me.

I look at a subject and have a think - then generally produce rubbish. Any decent photos I have taken have been more by accident than design.

I really struggle to visualise a picture in my head (to much other day-to-day stuff flying around in there ).

The first time i was able to picture a scene and take the shot and think "Yeah, that's just how i imaginged it would look" is this one.....

I actually took the shot with B&W in mind, which was also a first for me as i usually take the shot and then think "Wonder what this looks like in B&W"

Since then i've really tried and occaisionally got shots that are similar to how i visualise them, but its mainly luck

Either way, it's better than having an ear for it.

I think I see the possibility first without the camera then have a look through the camera. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. If not, I don't take the shot.

It must be because you have a good Camera :lol::lol::lol:

I put the camera to my eye, then think about whats in shot adjust if need be then take the pic.
So I guess I do think about it a fair bit, unless it something that is going to move quickly like our dog. I just have to get what I can when she is on the go.

It depends on how many lenses I've got with me at the time .

The trouble with simply "pointing and shooting" is that you don't see things the same way through every type of lens - you just get the "human perspective" from your eye, or the xxmm view through your lens. I'm not just talking about how much stuff you can cram into a frame; depth perspective is also affected by your choice of focal length.

So, I prefer to stop and think about how each lens choice would influence a shot, provided that I have the time and (importantly) the lenses with me :naughty:.

My plan worked fine, you all got thinking about how we take photos. of course we all think on someshots and on other we just click! but the majority of my shots i click and the image result is either luck or i am just able to frame a photo with very little effort!

I think it's called composing vs. getting lucky

If it were my eyes doing the photo, then I'd need a 1mm lens. Otherwise I settle with playing with some knobs and pressing a few buttons, before shooting.

Before I look through the lens, if I think whats in front of me is going to be a nice picture, I take the picture and hope it comes out the same on camera. I went to Ashridge Woods December last year, the sun was coming down behind the trees, I liked the golden colours on the path and the framing of the trees, I thought it would be a nice picture, so I walked back (had my 300mm lens, wanted to frame the picture) and took the picture :). I look with my eyes first, before I look through the lens. If I get half a decent picture with birds in the garden, its probably luck because they don't stay in one place for long
