IS lens for DSLR video?

Hi everyone.
Currently have a 50D (mainly used for motor sport) with a G12 as a day to day camera.
I am thinking about either upgrading my 50D to a 60D, or the g12 to a 600D, principally so that I can start experimenting with the video side of things.
Simple question really and probably a very obvious answer to those of you with experience, but here goes!
Do I need an IS lens to be able to make a go of this? I currently have a Tamron 17-50 (non VC) and wouldn’t normally hand-hold this at 1/50 sec. However, I understand that this is a typical shutter speed for shooting 25/30fps video.
Any tips would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.
