Is there any reason why a long USB cable wouldn't work with my 50D?

I want to play with tethered shooting, so I bought a 5m USB cable off amazon. As soon as I plug it in, it pops up with a message saying "A usb device has not been recognised".

If I use a different (shorter) cable, it recognises it fine. New long cable, same error every time.

Have I been sold a dud cable, or it is a well known fact that longer cables cause issues (I can't personally think of any but thought I'd ask before asking for a replacement!). I can't think of anything that uses the same cable that I have lying around unfortunately to give it a properly thorough test :(

Any suggestions very welcome!

5m is the max length for usb cables in the USB standard. Try another usb port, or maybe a usb repeater cable as well.

5m cable works fine for my D300's and every usb port that I've used them with though.

I've tried every port, restarting my computer, etc, nothing will make it work! :(

Looks like it is at the limits of it's design.

I was hoping things would work at their limits! Has anyone used a 50D and a 5m cable?

Used a 3m cable I do think your at the max & your computer just hasn't the power (Mac do suffer from this. I recently installed a IMac replacing a PC and needed to add a repeater cable to get it working again
