There is a virus about at the mo with a payload for delivery on April 01 but remenber this happens most years and is never the world killer doom mongers purport it to be.....so far.

BUT I have no faith in Norton whatsoever
I had a particularly nasty virus a couple of so years back
Norton was installed and up to date but it still got through
Norton's comment was "Oh I don't know how that happened"
I actually finally ( well not me but someone else on my behalf)
got rid of it using Avast and spybot
( Turns out there was a few other viruses as well and each did a job removing them all)
 
I have some software that will stop this superbug......and it only costs.......

Chris, I don't use Norton software, haven't done since I convinced the OH that it just used far too many system resources, and was not better than the total freebies. Sarc is good for checking up on the actual threats though, and more importantly hoaxes... It's astonishing how many hoaxes friends and family send me about this virus and that worm that'll eat the PCB's from the inside... :D

I've always been lead to believe that the best way to screw your PC up is to install Norton.
 
I must be in the minority who've never had a problem with norton.

I wouldn't worry too much as someone who was involved in updating a large system to Y2k compliance the risk that something could go wrong was enough to make the investment in testing and rework worthwhile.

It's never as bad as it seems. If you are really worried my advise is to switch off your computer (and unplug your modem/router) on March 31st and leave it off for a couple of days. If this is a major issue it'll be reported in the paper and a solution will be identified which you can apply when you next turn on the computer.

As an IT Security pro, Conficker does look like it could be messy. Plenty of people who know more than anybody here are worried. That said, it doesn't mean anything in particular will happen on exactly April 1st. It means there's going to be another huge botnet out there soon enough though, and that's a problem.

As for Y2K, it does amuse me when people say it was a bust. Nothing happened precisely because of the number of people who spent thousands of hours working on the issue. It might not have affected home PCs but there were plenty of older and very critical systems out there that needed to be fixed.

I would be a little upset if my latest £3Billion fighter aircraft was running windows! I also very much doubt they would connect anything even a little bit important to the internet.

From what I've heard some of the US Navy carriers run on NT but the tend not to sink if the software crashes :)



*how long (in feet) does it take to reboot an aircraft ? :eek:

It doesn't need to be connected to the internet, all it takes is someone bringing in a CD from home, USB key, connecting an unauthorised laptop to an unsecured network port etc. Shouldn't happen in any secure environment but it does.

I should imagine the issue is more one of the land based control systems being recently compromised and the military sensibly fully investigating it before carrying on.

A bug is an error in code, it's normally made through human error.

As for viruses, etc. it's made for money, plain and simple. If all goes to plan, the person who controls this botnet will have millions of PCs at their disposal. They'll be used to send spam, for blackmail purposes (pay up or we'll have 10 million PCs hit your website and take it down) and all other sorts of malicious acts.

interesting indeed. certainly not your average run of the mill malware.. extremely complex and the author(s) sound like they have a wealth of knowledge and resource at their disposal.

is it just me or is there pretty much no info on this on various AV vendor sites?

Well, everything is still working. I'm not impressed with this Y2K9 bug!
 
Seems to be working fine, just updated my works laptop ok.
