Is this computer suitable for photo editing

Hi Paul,

What photo editing apps will you be using?

Also it is better to buy a stand alone desktop and screen, you also need to cater for a screen calibration if you want to do it all properly.

Thanks sep9001
I'll probably be using gimp.
Can this screen be calibrated?

Not used gimp so not sure what spec you would need, but I personally would not buy an all in one. Problems with aio is when they go wrong they are a pin to fix as everything is plugged into a small spec.

What size screen are you looking at getting. Some of the dell ips 24' screens are very good, you can then look for a i5 or one of the ryzen builds with 8gb ran, ssd and a normal drive. There are a number of threads on the forums with various build, but as you will see it does get very expensive.

I am using an old dell i5 optiplex 790 with 16gb ram and two dell 2209wa ips screen and it works fine. So you could if you are not fussed, look for a used hp, dell or even Lenovo desktop, add a better GPU and some ram, then look for some dell screen and try that, unless you are set on buying new.

I would prefer to buy new just because my knowledge of computers is quite poor.
i haven't really set my mind on any specific screen size yet, just at the stage of looking about. But as i say i dont know much about computers and screens.

If you are starting out may be go for something mid range as I know when I started out I bought so much and in the end did not use it.:)

Yeah you are probably right there. I did like the one i posted. mainly i wasnt sure if the screen would be of a high enough quality. Or if it could be calibrated.

Screen on that one does say IPS so should be good enough and a calibrator would calibrate it. Hopefully other with better knowledge will help soon.

Not keen on all-in-one style computers. It's limiting and upgrade path later is a pain since you may end up having to change both screen and the computer.

I imagine this can calibrate the screen. But if you want good colour depth for photo editing you should make sure or check if it supports 10-bits.

Thanks for your help. Its definitely given me something to think about.

If you do go for that please check the price direct from HP you should get a better deal than from Currys. We did when we bought one for grandaughter

the 'pc specialist' range from currys seem good value - my oh recently got the entry level £549 box and this would allow more flexibility on the screen

I would rather use a company like "Scan computers" who can advise as experts against just selling staff from a shop

Thanks guys for all your help. My main concern is of the quality of the screen as I'm having real trouble working with any certainty on my current laptop.
Does anyone have any experience with this one and have any positive or negative feedback. Don't want to spend the money and find I'm still in the same trouble as I currently am. Is full hd 1080p enough for photo editing?

1080p is a bit dated and seem like its only 8-bit colour depth which I would be more concerned about. doesn't look like a great display for photo editing tbh, it would be fine for general use.

So I've been searching on here looking for other options.
I was wondering about the current macbook air, would it be up to basic editing of photos and whats the screen quality like on those. i would prefer a laptop rather than a desktop. Never looked at macs before so a bit out of my depth. Thanks in advance for all your help.

I have got a new one coming at some point.... hopefully Santa will make it in time.
I am hoping its good enough and going by the reviews it seems so but can't say for sure before trying it myself.

edit:
someone just posted some nice pictures processed on his new macbook air

perhaps just send him a message and ask? :)

Very small for any meaningful editing. You will still need a dedicated quality 4k monitor, you just can't escape that. It's a nice and portable laptop and hopefully it will get all the native software that it deserves before too long
