IS/VR adversely affecting image IQ

Ah,
I would be hard pressed to qualify one as an AF hit/miss as opposed to an IS hit/miss most of the time.
In demanding situations I get more AF misses than I would like, even with the best of gear. I'd like to have no AF misses, but sometimes the thing just refuses to lock in on the right spot regardless of the settings I use.
(By demanding I'm talking about things like a swallow in flight, or a Harrier Hawk coming straight in against a busy BG)

I need to regain my MF skills, but my eyes are going and these AF-S lenses have such short throw... makes it hard. Combine that with long FL's/shallow DOF and I'm stuck with relying on a bit more luck than usual.
