iTunes and Apple ID Account

I'm trying to change my Apple ID but having problems actually getting into the right page to do so. If I go to My Account and change it there it just keeps coming up 'if this is your account then log in as normal' or something similar.
Anyone any ideas please.....or even how to close an Apple account so that I can then reopen one with the new ID
