itunes/ipod woes

Recently I decided to move my itunes library from the PC Hardrive to a portable Hard drive. In doing so I seem to have lost everything - great!!

Now, I still have all the music etc on the ipod so can I just attach the ipod to the PC and transfer all the missing media from the ipod back to the PC?

Out of interest - as long as the music is on the ipod I'm not THAT worried about it being in itunes on the PC. I just want to make sure that any new stuff I add to the itunes library will go onto the ipod without all the missing media disappearing from the ipod? Is there a way to make sure this works??

Any advise really appreciated folks :(

It is possible.

Make sure your ipod is not set to auto synch.

ENable the disk drive useage for your ipod

view your ipod as a disk drive

find you music files and copy them to you hard drive.

select add music in itunes, and select the folder where you put your music

should work perfectly.

Just make sure you don't auto synch your ipod, otherwise it will autosynch with your empty music and delete the lot.

Are you sure you didn't just cut and paste your tunes, rathe than copying them? Are they on the portable drive?

When I click on a tune in itunes to play it itunes says it can not be found.

im pretty sure you get random letters for files and folders doing that, i cant remember if it retains the file tags either.

but i dont think the OPs files are missing (see my last post)

Sounds like the library doesn't know the music has moved, I don't know much about itunes but is there an option to repoint the library at the external drive??

There is freeware software that allows you to take your music from your ipod.

I've tried this and it does work, however only about 90% of my songs retained their file info, such as song name, album name etc. The others were just random letters and numbers.

Hi guys - sorry for not updating sooner.

I'll have a play around with this on my home PC later. The wierd thing is I couldn't find anything to do with itunes on the external hard-drive when I the problem first arose. Will see what I can discover later and come back to you all....

Many thanks for input so far :)

I did exactly the same thing. The above method sorted it for me. All i lost was album artwork.
