How do I stop iTunes opening up everytime my computer is turned on....it freezes and get on my nerves.
Appreciate any help so that I can start iTunes when I want it

It helps when you state what operating system you have ;)

On a Mac with Lion it could be that you reboot with 'open last programs', or perhaps you have it in your login items under your account settings to auto start.

On a PC....I'll leave that to someone else.
 
Don't think there's an option to auto run on windows version. Unless its in startup folder on the start menu.

Unless you have wireless sync turned on then iTunes will launch as soon as your device wants to sync.

Funny i was just about to ask a similar question. Itunes keeps starting when it feels like it I close it and within 5 minutes it starts back up. Itunes has always been a horrible piece of crap but its now really got out of control. Wifi sync is useless then? I will turn it off a see if that helps.
 
For windows the easiest *** okay if you are not comfortable with navigating rounds the registry is to download a copy of autoruns from sysinternals. ( bought by Microsoft last year). This software let's you see everything that runs at startup and you can simply uncheck iTunes and any number of other programs that slow down your startup routine.

Sysinternals was started by a guy called Mark Russinovich who is an absolute genius. I had the pleasure of seeing him speak at an event at the Microsoft campus in adding a few years ago
 
Microsoft bought sysinternals from memory. I need to look into it more I turned off wifisync and it's still starting I will stop the process from running at start up but it's not really the point it shouldn't be doing it. I also have the feeling that when you start iTunes and then close it the helper processor will have started and carry on opening iTunes randomly.
 
Yeah there are a few processes that are linked to iTunes such as the helper service, bonjour service etc. it's all bloatware IMHO!

I try to keep my startup list to an absolute minimum. If want seething to start at boot up I will let it , but I don't need apple, adobe, or sun telling me what program's should slow down my boot up routine!!!

How very dare they!

:lol::lol: Not so much itune haters Neil but imo Apple software period :D But I do agree with objohn. Why have all that stuff running at startup :shrug: Same as all the services that want to run, that is all fine but give us the choice when we install and tell us exactly what it is those services do ;)

bonjour lets you share library and handles networking, its on permanently as it collects data about the network. turning it off apple says "will limit functionality" of programs that need it.

ituneshelper and mobiledevice i believe "listens" for ipods etc so it can fire up itunes etc.

what have i missed out?

if you dont need them then great, stop the services/processes.

Thats a fair enough comment Neil and fine if you are all clued up on that kind of stuff. I look at it like this, it`s probably doing more than they say it is :suspect::suspect:
 
A program that transfers music to and from a devices shouldn't need a Gig to run It. It shouldn't start on its own with nothing connected and the repeatedly open ever 5 minutes with wifi syncing turned off.
I have no issue with apple I have an IPhone , iPad, and am looking at a MacBook Pro. What I do have an issue with is ITunes. I have removed all of the entries in MSConfig and things have settled down. You expect to have to go through this with MS products but not Apple.
 
a gig? mines using a whopping 150mb.

and no it shouldnt open on its own, there isnt an option in itunes to do that. the only time ive ever had that is with wi-fi sync on and the "open itunes when a device is connected" turned on.
 
I think it is easier for those in the know to switch it off that it is for those that don't know to switch it on.

Saying that an option to switch off in the installer for those that really don't want the added benefits would be nice.
 
i dont see what the big deal is, all in itunes uses about 200mb memory. its not a huge amount unless youre running an old 2gb machine with W7, but then its going to be slow no matter what..

i think people get too hung up on the amount of running processes on their systems..

I use iTunes over a network fine without bonjour or any of the other services. When I run iTunes, nothing but iTunes alone runs. Great software if you can tame it, very good for organising music.

if i remember rightly i think bonjour collects network information so it might not be essential persay..
