Hi all,

To be considered for a Uni interview at Edinburgh, they have asked for 5 shots under this theme title. What ideas would you have if you were to approach this, they ask for it to be taken in an observational / documentary approach

Thanks for your help

David

Once again, I have to say that this would be better if they were your ideas, rather than just asking all of us to help you with your homework...

The interviewing panel will be looking for evidence of your original ideas and thoughts (and expect you to explain your choices and the thought-process that led you there), rather than ours...

Once you have some ideas, I'll be more than happy to help you realise that vision and also with any technical help you might need, but as to thinking up ideas for you?

Police Line up
Set of 4 "Passport" style portraits
National flags
SOmeone looking at a bird through Bino's
Barcode
Guy at an airport with a "Mr Smith" sign

Just off the top of my head...

Someone using a passport photo booth
Someone punching their PIN into a cash machine (someone you know obviously!)
Finger prints

They have given you a huge brief, really one word you can literally do anything you want. And while the above ideas are good they probably dont want you to take the word "identity" literally, these have been done before, its your interpretation. Try to really think outside the box and create some visually pleasing images with a lot of thought process behind them.

Arkady is right about asking for ideas. The first thing you should do is research other photographers, their styles, really most photos express some kind of identity. A few examples of documentary photographers, Rineke Dijkstra, William Eggleston, Richard Billingham, these are just off the top of my head.

Please post your ideas here though and we can help and of course the end results!

When I did a city and guilds course years ago we had a one word brief, so the same kind of brief for a Uni interview seems fine to me.

But I'm with Rob, these have to be your ideas, they need to know something about your level of creativity in order to determine if you have the ability to fulfill the requirements course beyond your A level results.

If I had to do that I would probably take photos of what define me as a person (my identity). That could be my bedroom maybe, sport I like or my favourite posession...

I wasn't really asking for people to spoonfeed me into doing the shots, just trying to find inspiration here, clerely looking in the wrong place though. I'll keep searching through flickr to give me some ideas...

Already a student I see  I believe a lot of us did give you ideas David but good luck and I would suggest broadening your research further than flickr. ;) Still please post the results!

Nope not a student yet!!! Trying to get into various uni's, however before an interview to Edinburgh I need to prove my worth...

My ideas so far are maybe taking some local candids of people on streets who are instantly recognisable by their clothing... police etc etc

Maybe some friends who have objects which are associated with them, or 5 shots of one person to try and sum them up...

Personal identity sounds like a bit of a cop out but its still an option

Is it the art college your going for?

This is just my personal opinion but I dont think you should do candids, I think the uni may want to see more structured shots. The possessions idea is a good one, there doesnt even have to be a person in them or maybe just part of that person? Or take that object and put it into a completely different enviroment? I did something similar that for a project based on citizenship.

Personal identity shouldnt be a cop out, there are a lot of great self portrait photographers. Cindy Sherman, Francesca Woodman for example?

Anyway Ill stop rambling!:D

This should be fun....
anyone taking a photograph of a police officer could be deemed to have committed a criminal offence.
