Daft as it seems - by all accounts a red card was the appropriate action !

Yep, Violent conduct applies to anyone on the pitch, whether they be officials, players or some asswipe in a suspenders panties and a bra.

The thing is, if the ref did not send him off he would have been more than likely marked down for it. It's not always the refs fault.
 
The red card is looking like being quashed and the referee assessor didn't even know why it was given supposedly.

The ref didn't have any option. The player assaulted a spectator (remember Cantona) and deserved a red card. The fact that the spectator is a total plonk and deserved a thumping is irrelevant.
 
I see it as making a citizens arrest as the spectator was breaking the law by entering the field of play and causing a breach of the peace.

I don't believe a breach of the peace is an indictable offence, if correct a citizens arrest would very likely be an unlawful act itself...
