Yes
Took a trip to town this morning looking thru Jessops I spotted the Tamron 10-24 , the price being 369, called in at Jacobs and the price there was 435. So I queried this with the sales person who replied " lens have just gone up in price". :bonk:

And the point being what?

'Oh, lets rush home and put this on TP?'

Did you intend on buying the lens?

did you ask for a price match?

did you think anything other than starting another thread on camera shops who are clearly up against it at the moment?

We all know lenses have gone up but no need to once again slaughter someone in a shop of whom you know nothing about.

I don't think he's happy :D Bit of a strong reply

I agree there, bit of a harsh response, to a genuine price comparison post, I know they can get abit tedious, but don't think it merited that lashing.

I'd go with Pete on this one, I'm not sure what the point of the thread was.

Maybe Jessops have one, or a few, of the lenses bought pre price increases and they're doing the honest thing and letting customers have that stock at the previous price, where as Jacobs haven't got any left at the old price and so have to charge the new one?

id probally say you got that bang on there is so many price increases it getting stupid

It does appear that some people are being very quick to post " mine is cheaper than yours" threads. The Stores (shops that you can actually walk into and look at the goods) are having a really tough time of it. Because of the recent price increases, some of the smaller stores out there simply cannot afford to price match.
This lens for example... If Jacobs matched the price Jessops was selling at they would more than likely be selling at a loss, after you take into account the lens was probably selling at trade + vat at jessops to make way for the new version.

what a ridiculous response !

I am perfectly fine thanks. Trying to be reasonable, but once again people expect fluffy retort.

I just think it is pointless threads like this have started to turn TP into the laughing stock as a forum which is a shame. Reread the opening gambit - it is pointless. Had the OP secured the lens at a price they were happy with and advised of it then great. As it stands, pointless.

Thanks anyway.

I think i tend to agree, it would have made a bit more sense if the op just said, "got a great deal on a lens in Jessops today because elsewhere they have now gone up to blah blah blah" as the original post serves no purpose, just my take on it though :)

You've got to be joking!!!

I recently joined this forum from another photography forum where there were a lot more people like you that jumped on people's backs if they posted something others didn't agree with or see the point of. I've found that TP is far more relaxed and friendly and far from being a laughing stock and the admin tend to jump on anything that's out of order pretty quickly.

If you think a thread is pointless then just hit the back button and ignore it. If everyone thinks it's pointless then it'll quite quickly drop off the radar and disappear from sight, if not then others will comment accordingly.

as are the never ending stories of equipment angst...as my mum says, best to keep gob shut if nothing useful or pleasant to say...don't shoot the messenger.

:agree:

Why bother to look around if you thought the price would be the same?

When you do a price check you expect or hope there will be a price difference ... not complain about it.

Nobody's forcing anybody to either read or respond to a topic :police: - if you don't like a topic then read and move on - others may find it of interest even if you don't.

I'm sure some folk woudn't behave in the same way face to face :shake: so why do it in a virtual world?

i like jacobs. the one near me is so nice, the staff are kind and very knowledgable. which is a rather different case from my experiences in jessops across the road. but its just that jessops that they aren't nice in.

still prefer jacobs. the one near me seems as if they would give you a pat on the back for no reason, just to make you feel happy! they are really nice! gave me a UV filter for free! (it was second-hand, but still cool!)

Let's all just sit and type nothing then......

I'd have thought this should have been in the Shopping section under "Bargains" if Jessops are doing the lens so much cheaper.....

I have known Jessops to be cheapest before... not often of course but it does happen.
I don't think that the OP deserved the response he got though.

And the...369 pound question...did you get it ?
:p

Ek.

Yes I purchased the lens. Yes it was a saving of 60 notes. It might stop another not knowing the price difference purchase at Jacobs. If I had spent 60 pounds more than I needed to, I would feel a bit sick. Pity it wasn`t senor sadsack who got caught out. Why the outburst, is he married? get my drift.

Reading above, you say lenes have gone up in price? Why's that? I assume due to the current economic climate?

As Dave says, the weak pound meant it was getting to a point where the UK price was reaching parity with the cost of lenses in the US and Far East. This obviously wasn't in line with the policy of Rip-off Britain so prices got bumped to ensure the UK camera consumers continued to get fleeced.

Perhaps we should consider approaching http://www.rip-off.co.uk/nameshame.htm?

But you didn't state that in your post, it just looked like a random post that had no meaning. In fact it is because you didn't state you were looking for the lens or that you bought it.

Think this post would have been better named 'handbags at 20 paces' , then every one could have have come out of there corner bitch slapping each other. :bonk:
