Edit My Images
No
Hi All, a month a go I bought a Canon EOS1000D at the time I already had a Nikon D5000, but after buying a speedlight for my Canon I decided to sell the D5000 (Condused yet lol?) so I got myself a Nice EOS 10D with Canon Grip, 6 batteries, 2 x 2GB CF Cards and a Sigma 18-50mm lens.

I so love the camera, i too am finding the images very poor, and for some reason the camera will show all images on my 10d when using the 2gb cards but when i plug into the pc it crashs my vista premium pc and most if not all images are corrupt?? Bought a 4GB CF Card and have not had any problems other than the photos being very grainy, do I need a firmware update or something ??

Also i read somewhere that people use this camera still for wedding s alike,, is the quality to todays standards??

Thanks, any advice would be much appreciated,

So the card that you were using showed the photos as being corrupted, but now you've bought a new 4gb card that's not happening any more, right? If that's the case, I'd imagine the previous card was broken.

The grain is probably due to your ISO being too high, and made worse if the exposure isn't spot on. Could you post some examples? Noise reduction software might help too!

You should be getting good results from 10D. I have used one professionally and both my clients and I have been satisfied/pleased with the pictures.

A sample of your experiences would be good...

Anthony

Damn! Chris posted whilst I was writing. But what we both said about samples and also metadata perhaps..?

Could be the ISO is set too high causing "noise". you really need to post an unedited photo so the exif files can be checked to see what settings you a using.

The simple answer is no!

Cameras have moved on as they always do in the digital world but that doesn't mean that you can't get good quality images from it.

It all depends what you use it for and how you use it.

By that standard the 5D MkII can't produce images to "today's standard" because we now have medium format with even larger pixel count which can produce even higher quality.

A good quality camera in the hands of a good photographer will usually beat a better quality camera in the hands of a bad photographer.

Hi all, thanks for your comments, when I bought it off ebay the guy included 2x 2gb cf cards, the images are fine on the camera but when connected to the pc either via the usb lead or just the card, it crashs my pc and locks up, although now using my 4gb its fine, is their a way to reset the card to original defaults??

also im using an iso of 100-200 in the daylight!! what is the software - have you got a link also how do i upload a photo??

I use photobucket http://photobucket.com/to host my pics to put up on here.
Others use flicker etc etc

Post up some pics and let some of the guys on here have a look and see where you can improve on the quality.

I would say the cards are knackered, stick with your new one at least that one works and you are happy with it.

Thanks Spike,, good idea, ive got a flickr account!!! think i will have to get another cf card as a backup..

try formatting the cards in the camera, but tbh for the price if them you might aswell bin them and buy new for peace of mind

grain on that shot is perfectly aceptable ;)

no exif on the shot so can't tell the aperture but it does look a little 'soft'

Yes there is EXIF data - http://www.flickr.com/photos/lawriesphotos/4511051934/meta/

Basic summary for you:
Aperture f/9.5
Exposure 1/180
ISO 100
Focal length 23mm

You need to click on 'More properties' under the additional info on the right hand side of the page

It looks perfectly acceptable in terms of grain to be honest. The focus is slightly off, but apart from that it looks ok to me?

Just a couple more questions..

Where is the best place to get CF Cards from ?? also will my eos rebel lenses work with my 10d?

I get mine from amazon. Avoid ebay like the plague, there are far too many fakes on there! Any Canon EF-S lens will not work (kit lens etc).

Chris

Thanks Chris, just went to 7dayshop.com got a Duracell 4GB CF with 10 Year Warrenty for £10.00 Delivered.. so thats the kit lenses out the way.. lol thanks for claryfication.. probs best selling them and buying decent lenses eh??

''Also i read somewhere that people use this camera still for wedding s alike,, is the quality to todays standards?? ''

To answer your original question, no the 10d is not up to today's standards, however having used a 10d myself for many years (now got a 50d), I can confirm the following.
If you were to shoot an identical landscape shot, with a decent lens (not ef-s on the 10d), and kept the iso at 100, 200 or no greater than 400, did not crop/enlarge the image too much, I doubt you could tell the difference.

I just looked at the original size photo and there's nothing wrong with the image at all in terms of noise.

It is soft - was it shot as a Jpeg or as RAW?

If shot as a Jpeg that could explain why it looks a little soft - you need to check what the settings are for jpeg.

I wouldn't say it is unacceptably soft. A bit of sharpening and it'll be right as rain, although I would question the lens quality as I can see CA in the rocks.

When you state 10D, is this the short way of talking about 1000D?? (I'm just a little confused!!)

Hi, Thanks once again for your comments and support.

I have noticed that when I got my EOS 1000D it came with a ES-S 18-55mm and a EF 75-300mm lens, will the 75-300mm work on my 10D?

Thanks

The dots show you where to line up the lens when you attach it. Red is for EF lenses and white is for EF-S lenses iirc.

 Yay I got something right!!

There must be some technical reason to the different mounts, though I'm sure this is slightly going OT.

I really can't see the point of the EF-S mount myself, since all that take EF-S bodies take EF too.

If memory serves, they're optimised for the smaller sensor. That means the lens can make a smaller image circle, which means less glass, less weight etc. And of course the fact that there's incompatibility means canon sales keep on going ;) :D

But hey, at least if the lens fits, you know it'll AF, I still don't really understand the Nikon lens range :bonk:

Chris

Fair.

The only difference I knew was the EF-S lens have a shorter back than EF lenses(Hence EF-S(hort) ) and had been optimised for the newer digital cameras.

I think it's all a bit of a con to be fair. Since early digital camera bodies still produce mega images.

The image size projected on the sensor is smaller with an ef-s lens, its not big enough to cover the bigger sensors. Means less glass diameter so cheaper lenses.

Also the ef-s lenses can project further back inside the camera because the small sensor cameras use smaller mirrors that don't use up as much space when they flip out of the way. So stick an ef-s lens in a big sensor camera and you'll write off the mirror £££

Hence the slightly different mounts to prevent accidents

I to have a 10D, was getting poor quality images most of the time. This I have put mainly down to the fact I was using a cheap lens. I started off with the canon 28-80 f3.5-5.6 because I didn't want to throw loads of £££ into the hobby straight away. (I have a habit of taking up a new hobby, buying loads of gear then losing interest quickly)When I borrowed my partners fathers lenses i.e. the 17-40mm canon L series the image quality went up a huge amount! Now i'm a lot more into it I have invested in a new lens :D

Problem is I think the bug has bitten in, so the lens shopping list will keep going up :o

I'm sure you cannot use an EF-S lens mount on the 10D - it wasn't until the 20D onwards they launched/cameras accepted the EF-S mount?
