Well I went and got one. Typing this on it. What a great piece of kit. Any tips?
 
Yeah, when your typing and need to get a comma, question mark etc etc... dont lift your finger of shift, just hold it and move it along to the one you need. Hope that makes sense.

Enjoy lots of useless free apps off the store too!
 
Cheers for that, although with the UK keyboard on mine it is the .?123 key rather than the shift key, but that is quite useful!

There are lots of useful apps in the store too
 
I'd love one of these, but O2 gave me such bad customer service, I am very very reluctant to go back to them. Plus, I am with orange, and can't fault them in the slightest, I have been with them a year and its been great.

Its one hell of a nbit of kit though!

no need to use O2 on it, plenty of apps to un-lock one on the web. I would love an Iphone, but think the contract would be to much for me, and I would not use it enough. Will probably get an ipod touch (for email, calender, ect), and stick with my 15quid per month contract.

Its not quite that simple I'm afraid. You can't just crack it like that, you need hardware and it all get messy from there.

unless its different on the 3G iphone you can just crack the phone with your pc/mac and the USB cable

but i never bothered cracking mine. The phone is pretty useless without internet and with the contract you get unlimited internet. With a pay+go sim you'd probably spend more than £35 on internet charges.
 
Oh ok, maybe things have moved on, but I wasn't aware of a software crack for the 3G last time I looked.

Thats not y point really though. The phone is cool, and pretty clever, but not good enough to get me back on O2. Why should I have to buy it from them and then crack it myself, then rendering it void of garentees etc etc?

If it comes available elsewhere, idealy orange, I'll get one. Untill then, I am unlikely to switch to O2 for it.
 
Question for the iphone bods - is there a genuinely workable gps solution yet.

Currently I use a Windows mobile phone - works great. Biggest benefit is I can bluetooth connect to an external GPS and run tomtom as a very usable satnav system.

My contract is up for renewal in December and its either an iphone or another windows smartphone. I like the slide out keyboard of my PDA.

Sat nav is live now, however no "read out", its silent. If they got a voice attached, would be a lot better.
 
Normally I rely on my manly sense of direction and refusal to ask for directions.

However, I often have to use a van and trailer to collect and deliver cars, and some route guidance is nice as turning around is a lot harder.

When you've ended up in Holland at 2am in the morning - its dark and raining, and the road you were on has turned into a single track road. Then you find that roadworks are being done and there weren't any diversion signs. Someone has dug a ditch across the road and there is a pile of sand the trailer won't cross due to low ground clearance. This is when you want accurate route guidance.

In the above situation I uncoupled the trailer, took the ramps off the trailer and used them to bridge the ditch in the road, crossed it with the van, drove round the block, manhandled the trailer through 180 degrees, re coupled it and drove on.
 
The OS is much better than the PocketPC phones I've had in the past and not having to pair the GPS is etc is bonus.

I'm sure something will come along with proper navigation at some point, but at the moment google maps is just like a normal map, but with route planning and a blue to show where you are. I find myself following my general sense of direction and just using google maps to find the last bit.

One thing that can catch you out is that it needs a data signal, no phone reception (or being in a different country with expensive data) renders it useless...
 
Tomtom had a version of their software ready to go at the launch of the 3G, however there is some licensing issue with Apple that has stopped the release of true Satnav solutions.

You'd also need a car chargr as the GPS can eat the battery in no time!
 
Tip - Make sure you lug a laptop around with you at all times, or never ever ever wander away from a plug socket........ It's hungrier than 3 day old triplets and the battery doesn't last long......

Agree with this, but its an awesome tool to have! i usually get bored after a month or so but still really love it!!!

whilst in spain if i didnt use 3g i would get 3 days out of it, but turn 3g on and it goes down down!! plus im always connected my WLAN that must kill the battery also. If all these are turned off then i get about 2-3 days.

anyone recommend and good apps?

Wireless chews the battery, shlits it back out and chews it again just for fun!!

Hmmm, there's certainly some disparity with battery life across handsets with the 3G model, so perhaps that's it. I have mine connect automatically to both my home and work WLAN's and push is on 24/7.

If it's a heavy traffic day for calls and emails then it's down to about a day, day and a half, but it's normally 2 to 3 as I say.

In terms of apps, there are literally hundreds depending on what you want/need. There's actually quite a handy little app called 'PhotoCalc' (free IIRC) which calculates hyperfocal distances based on inputs of focal length, f stop, and distance from subject. That' s come in handy a few times.

Be warned though, there is a LOT of guff in the App Store!
 
the battery life did get extended dramaticaly by the 2.1 update. I can play and talk on my 3g all day and manage to make it home to a power socket or a pc.

There's a 2.2 update due soon too...... But will prolly kill it again :D

I really wouldn't be without my 3g

there are some small bugs (making calls i've found as buggy!)

The only thing I have had happen a few times is safari shuts down by itself. No bib deal really. I must confess that I would not be without it now.

I have been dealing with the small battery problem by having a car charger, I am driving for 5-6 hours a day so as I said no big problem.

I also have to say that since I have had my iPhone my home laptop has hardly been switched on, just easier to get the iPhone out. :D

yeah I think coding on certain pages etc conflicts and causes it to close.
the facebook application does the same.
