Just ordered the new 85mm F1.4G

Well finally found one in UK stock so placed the order and paid. Should be here Tuesday. I am very excited and hope it is as good as all the hype suggests. Anyone out there using one and can pass comment?
 
that and the 50mm are a very rare beast, i have had the 50mm for 3 weeks and love it, suits me better than the 85mm although i have used one and it's bob on:thumbs:

I have one - it does live up to the hype, and you'll love it.

I upgraded from the d version and while its an awesome lens I'm in two minds as to if its worth the £700 or so premium over the d

Let's see pics - and also be interested to know if it's worth the extra. I like the AF-D version not sure if I'll 'upgrade' ever or not.
 
Not sure I will be able to do such an excellent lens justice. Also not sure if I should have sold the 70-200 F2.8 to make way for it. Only time will tell.
 
just read the review on this lens in the what digital camera magazine where they've compared it to a canon 85mm 1.8 and sigma 85mm 1.4 and it came out top, then again would expect this as it cost twice as much as the sigma and 4 times as much as the canon, nevertheless mat charts do look impressive for the nikon. would love to see some images posted

I hate ordering stuff from online though. When I have paid over £1200 for something, I kinda wanna play with it same day. Shame the place I bought it from was over a 4 hour drive away! Should be here Tuesday hopefully.
 
I've got the AF- D version and absolutely love it, probably my fav lens. If I could fault it, it would be the fact it doesn't focus very close, and I understand the new one is not any better.
I'm sure the G will give stunning results, and in a moment of madness and gear lust, I was tempted, but honestly can't justify it.

I'd love to see a side by side test :)

biggest difference I've noticed is the new one is lots better when subjects are backlit

I have to admit I'm still not 100% sure it was worth the £700 premium over the D but I'm starting to think it was money well spent

Well, despite all my excitement, my new arrival is not coming. :(

Despite the man in the shop telling me that they DEFINITELY had one in stock and it would DEFINITELY be here today, and me making sure and asking this several times, I thought I would ring them and check where they are up to with delivery.

As it turns out, the man on the phone blatantly lied to me. They have none in, much like the rest of the shops in the country and apparently it has been placed on order for me, yet no one knows how long they will be as Nikon themselves don't know, or have any.

I don't know what I am more annoyed about, having asked my dad to wait at my house on his day off from work until I got home, or the fact that I have been blatantly lied to to take almost £1300 from me??

To top it off, the guy I sold the 70-200 F2.8 to came round earlier to collect it so now I am down a lens and there are no signs of the one I want!!

Rant over.

Also, chap on phone this time promised he would call back in 10 mins. that was 25 mins ago. I wait.
 
Why shouldnt you name them. They have lied and given poor service, other people deserve to know as to make an informed decision if they are considering buying from the same place.
As long as what you say is factual, then there is no issue.

Some forums I frequent are very careful about people posting bad reviews about shops. Not sure why, just didn't want to break any rules by doing that on here.


I was promised a phonecall back within 10 minutes. I waited till an hour had passed and called them back. Apparently the lad who sold it to me on Saturday, only works Saturdays and doesn't perform some of the checks he is supposed to do!!! WTF?? Just spoken to the manager and expressed my displeasure, and looks like that will be that. They don't have one, Nikon have no UK stock and no one knows when there will be any available.

So, Jamie, the Saturday Boy from Park Cameras, take a bow son, take a bow. Because of your uselessness, I am down a 70-200 which I sold to a fellow local forum user on another site I frequent for a proper bargain basement, mates rate. Because of your failure to deliver satisfactory customer service, I have had my dad wait around at my house on his day off, then myself after I returned home from work, to wait for the parcel you assured me would be here today. Well done Jamie, in the current economic climate, you are stealing a living from someone who would be more than happy to work on a Saturday to the best of their ability and earn some extra cash but cannot get a job because there are folk happy to meander along and mess people about.

On the plus side, I have just short of £1300 in my account more than I thought I would have, but am left with only one lens in the camera bag.
 
That sucks. I'd still write a letter explaining the above, but slighty more eloquently to the head office. Doubt you'll get much from it mind, but worth a shot.

If its any use, there is a 70-200 on AV forums for £850

For what its worth I bought mine from digitalrev when I couldn't find UK stock. I specifically asked about their stock levels when I ordered and they assured me they had stock. Sure enough I ordered on the 21st December and it was here on the 24th. Well pleased. May be worth a look, they are claiming stock at the moment

So what they are saying is "Danny the Saturday boy doesn't always check" ??? So what they are actually saying is he's done this before and we still let him do it? They obviously don't really care that much. How hard is it to fire a Saturday boy with someone who actually does the job properly and doesn't ruin their reputation? I'd report them to Trading Standards and whoever else I could think of!

Of course if they do care they will offer you a decent amount of cash to spend in their shop. How much would these jokers make on a lens like this?

Yep! The sigma is impressing me...

Having said that, after a bad experience with Tamron, third party lenses won't ever appear in my lens bag again.

Out of the 3 the AFD would be in my sights. Down to price
 
The AF-D is wonderful - hard to see how they could improve it - but the word is they have! Just maybe not enough to be worth the premium. I wouldn't consider the Sigma in the same league - from previous experiences with Sigma lenses.
 
Been waiting over 2 months for mine to be delivered. Had several false promises from Nikon of delivery dates. Including last week! It MAY be here this week. I'm getting a bit sick of Nikons stocking system. It was the same with the 200-400mm when I wanted one.
I'll have a little rant at Focus...

he he - the 200-400 is just wonderful - PLEASE stop talking about the new 85!! :)
 
finding the lens is not as hard as finding the cash 3 months after buying a 200-400!! :)
