Kicking myself...

Hi all. I haven't been on here much in the last 12 months - photography wise I've been in limbo, our daughter arrived, I've moved house, work's been busy etc etc..you know how it is.

Anyway. I've been trying to develop my skill level, and I'm slowly building a portfolio of good shots up, my ambition is to go fully "pro" when I'm ready. My personal interests lie more in landscape, fine art and nature, but to pay the bills and as a secondary interest I'm very much into portraiture and weddings. I also like the idea of advertising/editorial work. I'm not green, I know a bit about business in general and am researching all the time.
(which is why I'm taking things slowly)

To the point of this post, this weekend I was invited to a friends wedding. I didn't take my gear, as I was under the impression photography was taken care of, and anyway I'd have the little one to look after while my other half was involved with the ceremony. To cut a long story short the plan was changed and I could share baby responsibilities with her. When we got there, most (if not all) the guests had their cameras out, pop up flashes, kit lenses and so on. There wasn't an official photographer but there was one person with a 5D who knew what she was doing. But...there was I, sitting there wishing I'd brought my gear. It was a beautiful day, the setting was beautiful, the bride and groom looked great. It would have been fantastic practice for me :bang: Gutted!

I have agreed to do a wedding next year, I'm only charging my costs and the bride and groom know where I'm at in terms of experience in this field, and I'm busy researching and practicing as much as I can. Can anyone offer any general help and advice that I wouldn't necessarily pick up from just reading? We all have to start somewhere and it's nice to get advice. Between now and the wedding I need lots more practice so if you could help with ideas for that it'd be great.

No takers?

I should add, I'm not after business advice, more advice on the technicalities and best practices. I've asked for the B&G to put some thought into a shots list, I don't know the venues yet, but they'll let me know soon, and when they do I'm hoping to have a scouting trip, as well as a proper consultation with the couple.

I realise this is a hot topic sometimes. I can promise you my camera never ever sees the green rectangle! I only use full manual. I have good gear including flash with stands/brollies and radio transmitters etc. I'm a bit lacking in quality glass at the moment but hope to have that sorted before next year. I'm enjoying my nifty fifty at the moment!

I've shot as a guest at a wedding and then did a recent shoot with them at a gardens.

My main issues, lighting and posing the couple. exposing for white dress and black suit (and groom) proved difficult for me :)

Would have all been lost on ya if you had your camera, and depressing if someone with a P&S took pics the B&G preferred.

Sometimes you have just got to enjoy the moment.

Are we the same person? Limbo? Check. Daughter? Check. Moved house? Check. Work? Check.

I empathise completely... anyway, back on topic...

I've already seen the pick of the crop on Facebook, I know I'd have done a lot better (not wanting to sound arrogant there!) I'm waiting to see the "pro's" images.

Dan, I'm sure I'm me and you're you, should we check?:thinking:

Back to the plot - I was wondering if there were anyone out there with ideas on how to practice elements of wedding photography without actually being at a wedding (I'm a bit thin on the ground for friends who're getting married...)

One idea I had was to maybe have my girlfriend wear something white and have someone else wear black and then get practice getting the two shades right under different lighting conditions, you know, that sort of thing? Maybe someone on here had a similar sort of idea which helped them in the past?

Diddy Dave thats an excellent tutorial on getting started, well done for posting it.
