King Fishers in the North East

its a special brew aint it hahaha.

in all fairness im lead to believe there quite rare

Plenty about, it is knowing where to look. Which is a whole different ball game..........:)

I've seen a photo of one taken at big waters

I am assuming by the north east that you mean in and around the Newcastle area.
Without getting all commando and long hours waiting for the shot
your best chance of a sighting is FAR PASTURES hide at Rowlands gill the kingfishers tend to use a perch right in front of the hide the place can get busy but it dont seem to bother the birds.
I cant remember a single visit i have made when the kingfishers didnt put in an appearance.
you also have the added plus of being right amongst the resident red kites.

Low Barnes on the Wear one perched next to me when fishing, no camera with me and I have seen them flashing along the Tees in the summer at Barnard Castle but its a wide river and they have not come close enough to get a shot...yet!
