Knackered 1DS MKII shutter - advice! UPDATED!

Hi all,

I picked up a mint 1DS MKii last night for a pretty good price and only 6.5k clicks. Was delighted to have secured the camera but a few tests shots have shown a problem with (I presume) the shutter.

Any shot taken over about 1/250 sec shows white banding down one long edge (top in landscape, left in portrait format). As you increase the shutter speed the white band becomes more obvious.

A couple of questions I'd love answers to...

1) Would you agree it sounds like the shutter is going? (Disappointing when it is rated at 200k clicks! I think the shutter reading of 6.5k is genuine given the great condition of the camera)

2) Who would you recommend using to replace the shutter? (Price / service-wise? Also - is there any chance Canon would do it for free given the low shutter count?)

3) Anyone got a rough idea of cost? I have a feeling I've seen prices around the £200 mark?

Many thanks

Phil

I would send it to canon, I don't think you get it done for free and about £200 sounds about right, you could call Fixation for a price.Going by your description it is the shutter, my mk2 did the same at 37000.

Its a well known fault on all the 1Ds models, Canon should replace it for free.

I had my out of warranty shutter replaced by Lehmanns free of charge earlier this year on the 1Dsmk3, and in 2005 had one changed free of charge by canon on a 1Dsmk1.

i had a 2 year old MKII shutter replaced FOC after only 25,000 clicks, i was told by someone else at the time to mention to Canon something along the lines of "of merchantable quality" i cant remember the exact phrase i used, was something about being fit for the job, they didnt want to know until i quoted what i did then they put me on hold and after 2 minutes they were falling over themselves to get it replaced FOC

Very true and this applies to many electrical/electronic items. Most items have an expected lifespan that will normally outlast the warranty period and manufacturers should be expected to offer repair/replacement, you just have to know about it.

Hi all - a quick update - I've sent the camera off to Canon after first registering as a CPS gold member. The tech support person I spoke to suggested including a covering letter about my concerns - I have done this and hopefully will hear tomorrow about whether they intend to charge me.

I have included the phrase "It begs the question 'Is this camera of merchantable quality'". Thanks for that tip - hopefully it will have helped!

It is comforting to hear others have managed to get free replacement of the shutters.

using the threat of suing for 'not fir for the purpose it was sold' always comes in handy!

UPDATE:

Unfortunately Canon will not budge - I haven't owned it from new & therefore I cannot confirm the camera has been appropriately looked after.

They are charging £234.61 for the repair and delivery. I have contacted the vendor who has agreed to contribute to the repair cost.

Thanks for all the replies,

Phil

Can the previous owner not confirm it has been appropriately looked after?
