Landscape lenses requirement

At the moment i just use the one lens, my 18-70mm DX for landscapes. What other lenses should i have in my kit bag for shooting a little wider when needed ? i thought about a 10-20mm Sigma but unfortunately i'll need another filter holder as 67mm diameter is the fitments i only have including a 110stop.

i dont know the equivalent of your 18-70
but i feel 28 in 35mm terms is wide enough for reality
more gives you problems with distortion and massive top to bottom areas to contend with

For Dx my favourite lens was the Nikon 12-24mm. Always got great colours and sharpness with that lens.
Yes distortion can be a problem at ultra wide but sometimes i think you need the width to convey the scene properly. Distortion is very easy to correct in PP'ing and sometimes i liked the distortion.

Obviously 12-24 equates to 18-36 in DX.

Edit. You will still need to buy another adapter ring as it takes 77mm

well you certainly can get a good panorama shot with the wide-ones

The 12-24 becomes 18-36 on DX format. Your 18-70 becomes 27-105.

Even though these are DX lenses, they are still measured by the older 35mm format or FX.

So a wider angle lens will still be wider than your 18-70.

Does that make sense? I'm tired so may not have explained that as well as i could.

Why not get the 16-85VR? I found the 18-70 just a bit limiting and bought the Sigma 10-20. It is fun but wider than I needed most of the time and I would not have got it if the 16-85 had been available. I now use this as my walk-around lens 95% of the time and love it - 16mm is enough to give that w/a "feel" but easier to manage than 10mm or 12mm. The 85 end is useful too, and the VR is a bonus. And it uses 67mm filters.

I still have the 10-20 but hardly use it and may well sell it.

Thanks for the feedback, i think i might opt for a Sigma 10-20mm as some really good reviews i've read say it's a peach of a lens for wider landscapes.

I find it very hard not to use my Sigma 10-20 for landscape, admittedly 10-12 can be a pain but 13 is still way wider than 16 but without any problems. Its a great sharp lens and i love it, waiting for 67mm filter adapter and CP to arrive so i can try out my Tamron 17-50. I found when i started out every landscape i did with the d40 and kit lens was at 18mm and i wished for some more so it made perfect sense for me to purchase the sigma.

Just dont go out expecting to use 10mm for subjects in the distance as they will be soooo tiny you wont actually be able to see them, oh and make sure you feet arent in the shot
