Laptop - curser jumping all over the place

My wife has just bought a new laptop and it has a most annoying trait.

As you type, the curser jumps to a different, seemingly random place on the document and the words being typed end up in this random place in the document.

Any ideas what is causing this and what can be done to stop it happening.

Is she brushing the finger mouse pad as she is typing?
 
No, sadly not. We've thought of that and that has been ruled out.
 
Have you tried disabling it to make sure? also do u have a mouse plugged in? if so try disbaling/removing it.
 
had same it was the pad, when disabled it turned it self on had to update driver to sort out problem.
 
usually a Function + F6 or F7 to disable it. If that works maybe a driver issue.
 
does the keyboard have one of those irritating, useless nipple mice?

but yeah id put money on brushing the touchpad, i dont even know ive done it until im typing in the middle of a line 2 paragraphs up.
 
I used to have a laptop that didn't allow the trackpad to be disabled, I ended up taping a piece of card over it as it was a pita when typing - I always use a mouse so it's no loss to me.

Still happening. We're on to the 'card taped over the pad' method now. Let's see how we get on. Thanks folks. Badger
 
Have you looked at Keyboard in control panel? Assuming you've got windows!

You can do some adjustment to the cursor on the keyboard tab.

Having said what software are you using for the typing?
 
If you have a spare usb keyboard plug it into the laptop and try that see if you still get the problem.
