My laptop I use only when in bed and its only used for coming on here and facebook and watching bbc iplayer. I am thinking of putting the laptop on the swapz site but want to know if anyone has an Ipod Touch would it do what I want it to do, connected via my home wifi?

Probably, but for me the screen on those things is just too small for long term use. How about an iPad, I've just got one, in fact I'm using it now and it is ace.

If you're not good with your hands, an ipod touch will be very fiddly, especially for messages on here. HTH

Edit: My ipod touch connects no problems to my WIFI

Its not an option Mike

my mobile is touch screen and smaller than the ipod touch but I have customised the buttons for when I am texting to a larger setting.

To go from a laptop to Ipod touch, would be restricting. I am curious as to why you right off the idea of the Ipad, lighter and less bulky than a laptop with a bigger screen so you could put a few of your own photos on there etc as wallpaper or to show them off..

You could add some self adhesive velcro or similar to stop it sliding around too.. An Ipod touch is a great little device, though you may find it hard going for longer times online at the sites you mentioned..

Simon the only reason its not an option is down to ££££'s

Wondering about an Ipod Touch but not considering an Ipad - presumably it's a money issue (it's unlikely that someone will want to swap an Ipad for a laptop given how recently they must have gotten it).

I'm holding out for a HP slate. Looks like it should be better, and hopefully cheaper than an ipad.

Im just looking on swapz site for the ipod touch. some silly offers on it

For basic surfing and so on, how about a netbook? Smaller than a laptop, light, reasonable battery life.

iPads are lovely pieces of kit, but expensive. I would expect a number of ipad style devices running either Google Android or Windows to reach the market soon.

ipad type devices have been around for about 10 years. Apply just added their unique style of advertising to it and claimed to invent the wheel, again.

the main reason why i thought of the ipod touch was its size. mainly because if i wake up and can't get back to sleep i use the laptop to watch tv and lynn is sick of me waking her up to pass it me and the noise of the fan and hard drive. an ipod touch small enough to put in the holder at my side of the bed on the bed raiser. its not deep enough for my laptop. and the ipod touch i can rest on Oy chest with headphones on not disturbing her

Interesting, if a little wrong. I don't disagree there have been attempts at something similar, but nothing has been nearly as good as the iPad.

Before I got my iPad I was regularly using an iPod touch as you describe. Its fine for light use, and for watching a TV programme would work pretty well imo............but only in short bursts.

I've tried using it to browse for an hour at a time and it kills my eyes trying to read the small text (even though you can pinch and zoom to making things bigger).

You should be able to pick up an 8GB ipod second hand for about £70-80ish (second gen).

Well, I dont remember seeing that many around, or in PC world. If there were, they certainly did not catch on.

Er, try a bit longer than that. About 17 years.

The reason that Windows-based tablet PCs were so unsuccessful is that they were too big, too slow, failed often and had a battery life of around an hour. Apple created something that's slim, fast, reliable and has a battery life of half a day. That's why the iPad has sold as many iPads in six months as Windows tablets sold in 17 years.

Ipod touch no good for me tested one tonight:thumbsdown:

Bang goes that theory:thinking:

Give it another 6 - 12 months for the big players (HP, Dell, etc) to get their android / windows based iPad clones out and look again - that's what I'm planning to do for general web browsing from couch/bed.

I think the dell streak came out last month but is tied to mobile data packages at the moment (I might be wrong though).

Matt

No - you can buy the streak pay as you go for about £360, but I suspect it's still a little small for use for longer periods. Might be worth Julian having a try though because if it was big enough it would be pretty much perfect for him (aside from the money issue.)

The 'big' players - Dell, HP and Microsoft themselves - seem to have totally abandoned Windows as a tablet OS. Some smaller companies have made 'announcements' that they're going to release a Windows 7 tablet real-soon. Yeah!

Had a look at that Streak it looks smaller than the Ipod touch

Archos internet tablets are one i was considering
with android being a big player in the operating system (and using it myself) and archos being a well respected company its a good idea if the size etc is good enough

I've just got a Streak and an iPod Touch myself and I can assure you the streak it is a lot bigger than the iPod Touch.

The screen on the iPod Touch is 3.5" with a resolution of 480x320.

The screen on the Streak is 5" with a resolution of 800x480.

I'm really loving the Streak. At the minute it is running Android 1.6 so has some limitations like lack of Flash support. However, Android 2.2 (along with Flash 10.1 capability) has been promised in quarter 4 of this year.

There are a few on the Swapz site, most seem to want to swap for Iphones etc.

Interesting that they are wanting to swap for iPhones. I almost went for an iPhone to overcome the Wi-Fi only on the iPod touch for browsing. The bigger form factor and openness of Android wooed me to the streak though. It was also a lot cheaper than the iPhone 4G.

I would not buy the streak for use a primary mobile phone, it is too big. (In fact I got mine on the O2 data bundle, no voice calls possible).

It is a great size for a small tablet though. I also much prefer Android (even 1.6) to IOS4, it is just so much more versatile.
