I've done some digging and for less money I can build an i7 dell than I can a core duo mbp so it makes sense to go with the newer better tech as I have <a month to sort it out.

Working on a i7-720QM chip should I get 4gb (£1088) or 8gb (1348), 1gb ati hd5470 graphics card so not shared.

The difference in money is me buying a panel/tablet sooner or later

a few years of future proofing running cs5 and lightroom 3

will be thethered a lot too

Depending on the config of the mobo, 2 or 4 slots - if you can get 2x2gig and have 2 spare slots just get 4 gig and buy extra memory from www.crucial.com (use their memory checker to make sure you get the right stuff) Dell always overpriced for upgrades in my opinion. I am not a dell hater BTW, I have 2 laptops and a Desktop here and have purchased about 40 in the last 4 year for family and friends.

I was dictated by budget to get the 4gb will do for now at least, 90% sure I have 2 slots so if I feel the need (and have the funds) I'll pick up a pair of 4gb chips
