Well according to AXA insurance you can't brake a laptop screen by dropping it.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't recommend insurance with them and won't touch them a barge poll ever again.

With insurance companies you have to be really careful with the wording.

For example, if it fell, I would say it was open, on a table and it tipped over.

Easiest thing is, someone was carrying it down stairs and they slipped.

Rubbish, of course you can. (However most breaks I have seen have been stood on, usually in kids bedrooms.) Touch screens are a different case though.

Direct Line paid for mine when I dropped it, collected and a new screen fitted in a very fast time
Gave the laptop away some time ago and it's still working ok although a tad out of date

Nope according to AXA screens don't crack from being dropped, got it in writing in there words 'its excessive" and another thing there trying to use to say they won't pay out is i don't use it much. Well at home i use a desk top (mac mini normally much faster) or an IPAD pro for simple web and game use. The MacBook pro only ever gets used when i am away from home for extended periods, for photo editing these days. IE motorsport weekends. it is an old unit but was damaged along with a canon 1dmk2. been about 2months now.

oh and don't get me started on the person they sent out to investigate. All he wanted to was fight. literally i nearly called the police because of his aggressive nature!

I've had a laptop screen replaced under my insurance this year - absolutely no quibble, I told them I had a receipt for the repair and they paid up without even seeing the receipt.

Well that's what insurance is for to cover accidents :)

Glad to hear not all places argue.
but from what i have been told i actually have too much stuff to be covered by them any way, so had to take extra cover else for somethings. Seems to me AXA are not the best option for me with high end cameras and laptops. My advise to those with expensive gear get separate cover for named items serial numbers etc, most camera specific ask for camera details, ok costs more then your contents insurance. But i have been told a fire or theft claim it would be equally as hard to claim due to the value of the claim to replace new for old being "excessive value" despite taking extra level of protection.

Is this the same claim? You dropped your laptop and 2 cameras?

Laptop and a 1Dmk2 got damaged in the same incident. Without going into too much details about how as that irrelevant here. but the loss adjuster/investigator told me i didn't need two cameras. They know there's two as they where listed on the policy, and kept quizzing on how i could afford two cameras that would cost £5000 each to replace.

In the event of of fire or theft, my camera equipment would cost around £40-50k now i am sure i am not the only to have that kind money invested if they needed old for new, especially as most of my lenses where second hand and not current versions, and over a few years. i.e 400mm f4 DO's are £1100-1500 second hand, new £6+K. Had my 1dmk2 quite a few years but would still do the job and has decent images. Some might argue in fact the autofocus of the old camera is better then more complicated 1dx mk2. the combined claim i have is around £7k as they don't make parts for either the MacBook or 1d mk2 so they can't be repaired.

You have my sympathies. We recently had a lightning strike. Nothing structural but took out almost everything with a chip in it. Phond socket, router, sky q, boiler, security light & camera, burglar alarm. Not a big claim, about a grand. In making the claim I've never been made to feel as much like a liar & criminal. "Fortunately " 3 neighbours were also affected so they had no choice.

I used to separately insure high end guitars until a friend in insurance told me not to. One of the claim questions is usually. Is this covered under any other policy? Then they, and your household insurer hide behind each other. Don't know if thats still the case. Now I just name the items and make sure my total contents is high enough. If for example your contents are wirth 100k and your insurance is 50k however small the claim they will pay you 50%.

ouch, i do use surge protection for most things like the ones i use cover for any damages caused, because many home insurance don't payout for surge damage, calling it an act of god, if caused by weather.

Well the camera and laptop insurance would also cover mechanical break down, and says its for home car theft or being mugged. But you right if covered by third part specialist the home contents won't pay..but it doesn't sound to me like the contents is going to pay at least for the laptop, because almost all there argument is around its minimal usage age, and laptop screens don't break. oh they also add there's some marks to list of reasons they don't want to payout for...

But one question they keep asking almost every time is what do you take photos for...and how much do you make from photography and then point out they can look into my accounts for fraud reason etc..make of that what you will.

the amount of aggro makes me feel like selling up tbh. like i say the equipment was named on the quote.

No different to car insurance , Have you ever had a insurance company advis you year on year that you car is worth less and less
But the premium goes up and up , Then when a claim is made the go by the trade used price lowest apitance if its a total loss
You think its insured for say £6K and they offer you £1800

They are entitled to write "home contents" insurance to exclude any tools of the trade or items used in the course of a business. My home insurance provider was clear with me that if I sold any photos I took, they would not cover my camera equipment and I would have to get a separate policy from a different provider.

If you never sell photos, prints etc then you should be fine, otherwise you're potentially stretching the definition of "home contents", possibly to breaking point. What does the policy say?

I know that’s where there pushing. But Never sold an image, never been paid for photography it’s purely a hobby for me

An act of God? I'd love to listen in to the phone call to the insurers if Richard Dawkins house is ever hit by a weather-related power surge then. :giggle:
