Laptop to seperate screen?

Hi - I need to use a separate monitor to display images at the same time they are displayed on a windows XP laptop. I've been into various settings and can display one or the other, but not yet both.
Am I missing something?
All help appreciated, so thanks in advance! :)
 
Check that your video card will support dual monitors. Check out display properties and under the advanced section you should see a button that says "Identify". This function is for Dual monitor cards. You should also see a diagram of 2 monitors in the display box.

If they are not there then it's possible you video card won't support 2 momitors
 
which laptop are you using?
 
Plug your extra monitor into the VGA port on the back of the laptop. Look for a key on the laptop with the letter "FN", normally bottom left. Now look at the "F" keys, one of them should have a picture of two monitors on it, normally "F4". Pressing both together should let you toggle between laptop only, monitor only or both. It normally takes a few seconds for each view to display.
 
Cheers guys - still head scratching. I've got the 2 monitor display funcion up on the system and it identifies both ok.
It will allow working display to one or the other and I've just tried sponge bob's idea. On this Tosh sat laptop it's FN+f5 - which doesn't alter anythig, but brings up a LCS/CRT box, but nothing can be altered.
It's bound to be a tick box/key somewhere, but . . . ?
 
Yaba daba doo! -It was the wait . . . as suggested by neilG that has done the trick. Thanks guys, where would we all be sometimes without these forums - the loony bin :D
 
Is there an option for mirroring?

you'll probably find it cycles:
internal (laptop)
external
both

on successive presses, but leave a few seconds for it to "catch up"
