My laptop has decided to start acting up the battery unplugged from the mains lasts, 5 minutes tops. The adapter while plugged in gets to such a temperature that it is untouchable. Is this a sign not to use the damned machine???

Is it a compaq by any chance? My friends has done the same thing.

No its an Acer, I have noticed the adapter getting so hot its not touchable over the last week or so. Now when I unplug it from the mains it says full battery then with in minutes it turns itself off flashing the battery symbol.

I have an HP that does this (Compaq and HP are essentially the same company) I just don't use it on my knee. Only cure for a battery failing is a new battery, how old is the laptop and what brand is it?

Its probably 2 or 3 years old its an Acer 7730

Don't just assume faulty battery, it could just as easily be a faulty charger, therefore battery not getting charged. A dud battery shouldn't make the power adapter heat up at all, never mind to that extent... I've seen probably hundreds of faulty/dead batteries over the years, but none of them exhibited those symptoms with the charger...

1 of my carers has the same model adapter for her Acer laptop, we tried her adapter, immediately it got hot like mine. So any ideas?

might be the charging circuit in the laptop, if its not working as it should the power supply may be overloading leading to overheating.

Is that repairable???

not user repairable really, probably a motherboard swap as they are usually all in one I think....

if you take the battery out so its not "charging" does it still get as hot?

the charging circuit is normally built into the main circuit board in the laptop.. you could try someone like a tv repair place that works on circuit boards etc but most computer shops would just price up a new board which will probably be less cost effective than replacing the laptop..

Battery out of it and immediately cooling down significantly, still on warm side but not red hot

I reckon your battery is knackered, if you leave them on mains supply all the time is significantly shortens the life.

If you have a carer with the same machine give their battery a 5 minute try and see if theirs gets warm, don't leave it too long just long enough to see if your PSU heats up quickly.

If it proves to be the battery look here

Cheaper than a mainboard.

we did that and the adapter got red hot again.

As I type I have the adapter on my chest it is getting hotter.

My Acer is the same (travelmate 4050) it's 4 years old and about a year ago the battery life was down to about 10 minutes. I have taken the battery out and always use it plugged in. However the mains thing is still very warm.
I did hear that acers are known for this and for gradualy working more slowly and that after about a year they should be backed up and formatted and start again with the original discs. I've not been brave enough to do this so suffer with a painfully slow PC despite also taking off all my music and alot of my pics.
Rubbish!

If the battery is knackered then it may cause the charger to overheat so it is quite likely just in need of a battery. Probably £30 ish from ebay!

Its a pain in the backside as I use this when stuck in bed I got it so I wouldnt have wires trailing across, so before this lot happened I only ever had the laptop on the hospital table at the side of me, now I have to get my hoist unplugged and wires across the bed and chest to use it. I will put up with it as it is. Thanks for the help.

well its just come back from repair shop where charger is plugged into laptop is faulty shorted battery out . And is causing adapter to over heat. Needs a new motherboard, he said its not worth the cost of parts and labour. £25 to look at it he charged but if he repairs it we get that knocked off repair price

What is the laptop?

I agree, I repair laptops and PC all day. The power connector on the Motherboard is always a weak point. I replace these all the time. Takes about an hour, with strip down.

The part looks identical to the one on the Compaq I used to have that needed replacing every 6 months :) I will order the part and fit it when it arrives!

Part ordered out of your fund :)

Will fit it when it gets here :)

no mate battery buggered as well cancel order.

I have a slightly older version of your laptop (Aspire 7720) but my adapter also steamingly hot. It's not an issue as such just not a very efficient power adapter. Replace the battery and it should be alright although it's probably worth getting it looked at anyway. Hope it's sorted soon, Julian :)

Julian, part part costs < £4 and a new battery costs £31 so even if you run it off the mains till you can get a battery it is still worth doing. In fact it is still worth doing if you only ever run it off the mains :)

hmmmm ok :suspect::thumbs:

when using it on mains for any time It best to remove the battery. this will lengthen the life of the battery.

Yeah I know but its just going to be on mains if Jimmy Saville (Mr Fix it) Darren can sort the power connector out :thankyou:

Only if you have a carp laptop...... Oh yes he does! But the battery is already dead :)

This advice is a bit out of date with new laptops that have decent power boards in them. Certainly any Apples with intel or G4 processors.
